I thought I had a side on view, this is the only one I have ATM... the car's shifter linkage is disassembled right now and I can't move it out of the carport.
I will post also a closer photo of the front corner as well, as now the skirting piece that forms the lower part of the wheel arch has been painted to match the bumpers

Is that a plastic piece replacing the old rocker panel rubber and metal cover?

kach22i...I had some flat alum. Plate rolled to take the profile of the old rocker panels, matched the fixing holes and installed it in place with the original screws. The black line behind is a 3mm rubber gasket that runs the length of the skirting board between it in the car body. Unpainted aluminium... thanks willcall,... this car is an S, slightly narrower than an SC...I am in Holland park... come by and see me... friends close by have 944s that we work on and share tools/knowledge...we track all the cars but this year we seem to spend all our money working on them..

cheers

Tony, great to see you settled in and finally enjoying the 911. Must have been a painful separation, one that many of us could not endure.
Car looks great and I do like your mods. (Don't be offended by the comments from my fellow Canadian-he can be excused 'cause he's from Ottawa.) lol.....
Keep the pics coming- nice work is always inspiring.
Cheers,
Johan

Thanks Johan,.... yes it was agony waiting to get stuck in to this car (must have done the mod in my head a thousand times before picking up a tool)... still so much to do... new clutch, roll cage, seats, fuel cell, forward oil cooler.

Truth be told, as you know, and as the very first photo shows...I had everything ready for the backdate build 'proper'.... but costs/circumstances take a hold and we all know how that goes.... So, as I was waiting to earn cash to fund the work...I thought about the bumper/skirting mod and how to execute the work in a way that could be 'un-done' in future.

I am really interested in hearing any comments, critical or otherwise... because I really am the last person that would alter a 911 just for the sake of doing it. I think backdates look great, save weight, etc. ..this project instead became a sort of 'what if' experiment, on a very small scale. The very word 'scale' really figures into this build with me, because the 911S is narrow (I think 1977 is the end of the line for the narrow rear), so anything altered out of scale would be apparent.

Do a search on early 1970s 911 race car images.... the owners did some crazy mods to the rear arches and wings, and splitters.

Looks great without looking at oil lines, or bulky rubber trim.

Needs some end caps, perhaps one day?

Yes I have to fashion up some sort of end cap...i traded the extg. rocker end caps, the bellows, rear over riders, and a set of Fuchs centre caps and a bit of cash for a set of 16" Fuchs wheels for track tires (15's currently on car).

Hi, I re-assembled the shifter coupling, shifted the car out of the carport to take a side on view

quite like what you've done with the side skirts (or rocker panels as the yanks call it). integrated very cleanly.

Thanks c-m..... the skirts replace the existing,... no real weight trimmed..but the new ones do the job of protecting the oil cooling and a/c lines running fore and aft..

By removing the rubber stripping and making it 'no profile'... the new 'rocker' hints at the detail of the earlier cars.

The car will eventually be blue (original factory colour), so the alum. Skirts will be more visible, with white number circles on the doors, bonnet and hood, and orange bumpers shown currently. Hopefully the car can pull off the livery... putting a camber in the wheels, a ducktail, half roll cage should help make the car look more of a race car. Needs lots done to the suspension, a long road ahead.

Tony, a really, really great looking car. I love the narrow body with your tasteful mods. What profile rubber moulding did you use at the end of the bumpers and where did you get it? I may need some for my RST project.
cheers,
Johan

The rubber bead

Johan... the profile was sourced from a Australian retailer by the name of Clark Rubber, I will find a link). It is basically a black rubber glazing bead (in the form of an 'H', the uprights of the 'H" form a sort of curve. In actual fact the profile is not quite deep enough,.. so I am looking for a deeper one. Also, I am trying to source one in orange rubber, to match the panel work on either side.

Still not completely happy with this,..... work in progress I guess..

The narrow body

I can only 'just' squeeze the 'sevens' under the rear arches (which are rolled),... and always in the back of my mind is the idea to add RS flares (not SCs) to the rear for more tyre accommodation,.... but as 1977 is the last of the narrow bodies, I am trying to convince myself that its not necessary. And if one looks closely, there is already a bit of rear arch flare on the 1977...not to the extent of the C or the SC, but more than the narrow body cars of the sixties. This is really the trick with mid year cars.... they are a bridge between old and new, how they are modded (and how much they are altered) pushes them forward (or back) in time. I guess I am trying to push mine back in time, making a version of the 911 that would have (or might have) existed between long and short hood models, if that makes any sense. I often wondered if Porsche carried out a design study for a bumper without bellows (we all know that the impact bumper detail was adopted for all markets, not just the American market, though the internal fixing details differed between Europe and ROW). I have never found a photo of such a bumper in my research, but it seems plausible that it might have been studied.

This micro-design/nonsense can really do one's head in, lucky me I am surrounded by Porsche nuts here that think its completely normal...I know I am not the only one that waits till the end of the evening for the dusk light.... looking at the car and thinking about the front and rear arches, the stance, the colour,.
