Need a quick photo of a targa seal

I'm installing new seals around the openings on a 72 targa. The seals I have don't really seem to fit together at the base of the windshield post at the door gasket seal connection.Anyone done this? Can someone photo theirs and post so I can get an idea how the connection is made?

TIA,

Rick

From what I have read the new seals do not fit the Pre 964 models that well, you might want to contact Dan at carsinctargatops (NO affiliation) and see if he can be of assistance

There are two different styles of door seals, one that is open and "c" liked shaped like the end of your front Targa seal, and the seal you currently have. I have the same situation, and just butted the two up as good as possible, I also have a fair amount of wind noise, so that may be part of my problem.

Thanks, I have Dan's windshield seal. (pictured as the upper section in the photo) The targa fit is horrible and the gasket isn't any better. I have been messing with it all day. The top seal above the passenger glass is really wonky. I have the glass adjusted as far as it will go and it's still like the targa top is shifted to the left side. The glass does not actually touch the seal and the back top corner of the glass is outside the protection of the seal.

I think I at least have a solution for the windshield seal to door seal fit. I'll post a photo after I modify the door section of the seal.

Do you have a copy of the Targa sealing manual? Porsche had several booklets that explained some sealing tips.

Yes, it does seem that there should be a better way to seal up these cars, but each one seems to be different. Also, as they age, the tops do get wonky and should be rebuilt.

No manual. You need a manual to install a targa top? The top was rebuilt by Dan.

I'm a 914 guy. I have rebuilt many of them. This is my first experience with the 911. As a overall car I'm really not impressed. I'm not just picking on the targa models. But the car overall is poorly constructed.

914 don't use shims in the doors or latches, The top seals (even the reproduction ones) are perfect. With new seals the targa tops seal out water and wind noise. No drama. Put them in place and go. The interior trim fits well, the seating position is better (lower). I can't comment on the drivability the 911 enough to make an comparison. But real race cars are mid-engine.

This is one of our most recent. Rust free but hit in the front real hard.

Then there is my Alien....

There should be a smaller tube about 1" or so long that fits 1/2 into the hole of the lower seal and then slides the other 1/2 into the upper seal. Maybe add a little 3M adhesive to each end.
Sorry I don't have a picture to offer because mine is all in parts right now.

Remember 911 Targas are early 60's technology and 914s are late 60s. Plus they had VW working with them. Ever shut the door on a bug? Rest my case!

Dan recommended that I use the bottom seals for a coupe when using his windshield seal -- they're a lot longer and are therefore cut down to mate into the bottom of his front seal. You should be able to adjust the targa side seals out to come closer to the window glass and adjust both the angle and "parallelness" of the window glass' orientation to better meet the targa side seal. similarly, both the height and angle of the side "vent window" is adjustable to seat firmly on the targa seal. Sounds like you REALLY need the porsche targa adjustment manual !

Here are photos of my all original '79 Targa if it helps. I noticed that the windshield seal seems to have a short, about 3", extension down to the lower door seal that matches the profile of the separate door seal.

And this is how the seals look at the back of the door:

rwest was on the right track. Your lower door seal is not the correct profile. The outside part should be an open 'C', with the mouth of the C facing forward (at the point they meet). This should have enough extra to trim and then glue (3M adhesive) to the matching free end of the upper seal.

I got my door seals from International Mercantile. You should be able to get the correct one if you want.

Mike

Thanks guys. For now I notched the seal so there is an overlap. This should work until I reorder the seal. I have to deliver the car on Sunday 14 hrs. away. I'll inform my friend about the seal issue and install the replacement next time I visit.

As far as the targa fit goes I have the manual pages now. I will be spending the day tweaking the door glass alignment with the slot and washer method explained in the text.

Your windshield frame looks weird. It looks like it has been modified.
