Targa owners: show me your Targa bars
Mine is sorely in need of refinishing. Mothers Back to Black just doesn't work, so its looks like time to repaint it. Mine has somewhat of a 'textured' finish to it, though I've seen others (pictures and in person) that are smooth.
So, show me your Targa bars. Also, flat, satin or gloss? textured or smooth? (I'm leaving out stainless, as its an '85, so no offense to earlier Targa owners.) The poll allows multiple choices, so satin/textured or gloss/smooth are OK answers.

I just refinished mine using Krylon outdoor patio Satin Black. I also bit the bullet and installed a new front Targa Bar seal and plastic riviets to finish it off (After 23 years it needed a new one.) It turned out very nice and a very good match. I'll post a pic tonight with the rest of my finished project.

I like the original satin textured, but since it would be easier to make a refinish/repaint in smooth I would say refinish in Satin.

When JMPRO comes out with his f-glass skin I'm going to go all hellblaumetallic. My Targa bar is flat, sorta textured. Original, as far as the records indicate. I tend to believe them, since the PO didn't believe in touching up paint anywhere else!

We've had some clients that requested matched to the color of the car finish on their bars. Some people like it , some don't. The disadvantage is the possibility of scratches each time the top is handled.
If you find that elusive hard targa top, paint that too and you have a "coupe" |

TRE Cup,
I'd given thought to the potential scratches/wear, and then realized that the paint on my windshield frame is worn down to the bare metal from the PO's constant removal/installation of the top. The black paint on the bar is worn through, too, where the top makes contact. So I figure, "what the heck", give it a try, and when I finally put enough money together to do a complete strip and repaint, I'll do it "right". I probably drive the rattiest 911 in Arizona...

I voted that mine looks like a gloss black, only to find that I was the only one to vote that way. I guess I waxed it to much or I don't have a clue what satin should look like.

I love the stainless. Are the painted bars stainless underneath? And if so, how do you go about getting the paint off without damaging the stainless finish?

Ilan--
I believe they are stainless underneath and it just takes stripping the black off to get to it. thanks to all those posting - your opinions and thoughts help a lot!

Stainless on a newer car makes it look dated. Satin or flat is the way to go.

Finally got aroound to taking a pic. I removed the Targa bar from the car and sanded the OEM paint w/150 grit. Then 3 coats of primer, sanding with 300 grit between coats. Final spray was Krylon Satin Black outdoor patio furnature paint, 3 coats. Let dry for about 5 days before touching, then installed with a new front seal.

I voted Satin Black, but it's your car - do what makes you happy.
Mine was painted satin black by the previous owner, and I like it against the white repaint. If I take the car back to the original Irish Green, then it might be a bit dark for my tastes. BTW, my car looks like Izzy'. -Lawrence |
