Can oil pressure be too high?
Hello,
I recently noticed that the oil pressure in my 88 911 is higher than it has been in the past...it's basically at the top (5000) when I'm driving on the highway, tach around 3000-3500. It goes down to around 3000 at idle. (Before, it seems like it hovered around 4000 on the highway.) The oil (synthetic) was changed recently. Just wondering if the oil pressure is too high, or if this is something I need to worry about! Thanks, Margot |

There is a pressure relief valve (or two) to handle the pressure peaks when cold. I somewhat remember some obscure(?) situation where the relief valve doesn't respond quickly enough.
I'm sure someone can chime in w/ those details; but in general there are systems in place to keep the worries at a minimum. Temp will really affect the pressure for a given RPM. When the motor is warmed up, your oil pressure #'s should about match the tach #'s . . .5000rpm ~ = 5 bar on the gauge. (the relief vale is to open at ~8_bar (114_psi)

Margot, mine performs similarly, nearly 5 bar at highways speeds, 3 bar when warmed and idling.
