Resistor (?) on wiper motor wiring

I had an electrical fault on my windsheild wiper motor wiring, a previous re-wire with non-color coded wires shows an apparent reversal of a connection that resulted in a melt-down at the fuse panel. That in itself was strange, the fuse actually melted to the fuse console and still allowed current to keep flowing and generating enough heat to melt the panel (!)

This is a 1971 T targa, US delivered.

In any case, I am having to rewire the wiper motor and connections and have no faith in the previous connections. I have found some helpful diagrams here:

1971 Wiper Wiring Help

However I am not finding guidance on the proper connections for what appears to be a cylindrical metal resistor attached to the wiper motor. There are two connections coming off the cylinder, one black wire with a female spade terminal and a second male spade terminal on the cylinder with no wire connected to it.

I also see a female spade connection on the body of the wiper that looks to be a ground connection.

I think I can figure out the other relay and motor connections from the various wiring diagrams, but can someone please help with the proper connections for that cylinder?

Thanks!

That looks more like a capacitor than a resistor. It may be part of the park feature, but my manuals are still packed from my move. Look for a symbol in your schematics that looks like this:

-|(- or -||-

The cylindrical object is a capacitor, which should be the one shown on the right of #73, wiper motor. On mine the R/W goes to the capacitor and the black lead from the capacitor connects to the terminal board,53a. If you have intermittant wipers I can't help since the diagram and my car is just the standard 3 speed.

My 2 relays (#43 and 44) on wiring diagram SL35 here:

Everything is the same except my wiper motor only has 4 terminals together: 31b, 53a, 53b and 53. I dont have "31" which on the diagram goes back to the 31 terminal on relay #44.

My motor doesnt have a "31" connection...I have 31b but the only 31 is on the 5-pin relay...any other guesses?

Thanks!

Ummm....well on some diagrams 31 just goes to various grounds anyway, so perhaps I ignore the missing "31" on the motor and just the motor ground screw to the body ground? And the relay 31 to ground?

I can't be sure since mine is standard 3 speed, but the 31 connections are grounds. The capacitor leads would not get connected to ground, it would be in the power circuit.
My car is a 1973 with a slightly different motor. The heavy black lead goes to the capacitor out of picture in the upper right with the other side of the capacitor connected to the R/W. You can see the Brown ground wire jumped through in the lower right, terminal 31.

The wiring diagram you linked to is for a 1970 which is slightly different from 1971 and later.
The picture in your post #3 is an explanation of how to wire the wipers to by pass the intermittent feature and just work as a 3 speed. It seems to say the intermittent wipers fail a lot and this is a way around it.
The #31 ground connection would not be on the terminal block, it would be a male spade connector on the wiper motor housing. In my picture above the double brown lead terminal is below the terminal strip. I can't tell for sure, in your second picture, is that the brown wire connector tab by your fingernail.

Post #9 in this thread has a picture but below it he says it should be reversed on 31b and 53.
'70 Wiper Motor Question

If you read post #23 by VintageSeats he gives the pin out, unfortunately the phots don't seem to load.

This is what I can amke out of it with the information I have.
