Tire Width

What is the widest tires you can reasonably get away with on a standard 3.2 Carrera (meaning I don't have turbo look fender flares). Right now, my car has 205's on the front and 225's on the back. If I went wider than that, would I have to replace the Fuchs that are on it?

I've seen wider tires on plenty of 911's but didn't know if new wheels are a mandatory part of the cost I would have to take into consideration.

If you have the normal 7" rear wheels, 225/50-16 is about it. You can fit 245/45-16 on either 8" or 9".

Of course, there's more to the wider look than just tires. I still have the stock 16x7s on the rear of my '84, with 225/50-16 tires. But the 1" (25mm) spacers on the rear make all the difference in the look.

Arne2, that's what I was afraid of. I suppose that project will have to wait a few months.

BTW, I took your advice and have some Euro H4 headlights en route with the relay and paint for the rings (father's day present). Hopefully, by the end of next week my car will look a little more alert!

Back on topic, if you were to look for wheels that support a wider tire, what vendor seems to be the most reliable for older Porches?

Now the spacers may make the difference I'm looking for! I really just want a slightly more aggressive stance, but don't necessarily want a world of work getting out of the driveway. Are the spacers a DIY project or does a tire shop have to install them?

Two kinds of spacers - slip-ons that require longer wheel studs, and bolt-on adapter type. The bolt-on type can be installed by anyone who can change a flat tire. The slip-on requires you to remove and replace the studs in the rear hubs, after disassembling the brakes.

Slip-on are preferred for cars that see any track time. Bolt-on are generally fine for street use. Mine are bolt-on.

how low are you running? my car is lowered a little and running 255's rear, 235's front - definitely required wider wheels (17" wheels)

I've run 245s in the front and 275s in the rear. There's not much room left.

I have 245/45 on 16 inch rims.
there is still room, but I think if you start to go wider you hit issues on the right rear with oil line clearence, right?
