early 911 tools and equip
this may be a silly question to some of you, but, what is the piece of wood under the 'boot' carpet for? Also, is the heater box the proper place to store tools and jack in an early 911. I was lucky enough to pick up a car with all the original pieces, though they were scattered throughout the car. PO even left an ashtray full of butts for me (so considerate!)

The plywood under (in the 'pocket') the Perlon carpet is to keep smaller items of luggage from falling down into the area between the left battery and spare.
The trapezoidal hatch is informally called the 'smuggler's trunk' ... and, if not occupied by A/C components, can be used fro infrequently accessed items. The jack and tool kit is easily stored forward of the spare tire, closest to the bumper.

The wood board is to support the carpet over the battery area in the left front. It helps keep stuff from sliding down into that corner.
The "smugglers trunk" isn't the official place to store the toolkit, but it works. I used to carry a small plastic gas can in there for emergencies. Now a big gel-cell battery resides there.
