Shampoo your carpet?

My car has a funk that may be emanating from the carpet. It has been on jack stands for 5 years until recently. I can't find any mouse poop or anything like that and the interior was not wet when I put the car away. It just doesn't smell like I remember 911s should smell.

Anyway, have you ever cleaned your carpet? Did you shampoo it? What did you use? Changing out the carpet isn't in the cards right now.

Vacuum thoroughly.

Then carpet cleaner and wet vac.

Then leave out to dry.

If smell is still there, time for more drastic measures.

I carefully pulled my carpeting out, did some rust repair, etc., and while that was going on, I took the carpets to a professional carpet cleaning place - that mostly does Persian carpets - and had them clean them. They looked like new, and there was a lot of grease and such on them. Later a chocolate bar got left in the car in the hot sun and it melted right through the carpet. I pulled that section out again and took it to the same place with excellent results.

The total bill for all of this was around $90. Since I pulled the carpets out carefully they did not stretch, and they glued back in perfectly. Looks like new.

Yep! I just did that....

Dad's car had a fair smell that I could not get over, so I pulled the carpet, and vacuumed it. Then I hit the carpet with a steamer machine that removed most of the funk; I believe that it was a mix of oil from the tunnel, and other stuff. When my wife got in the car, the first comment she made was: this thing smells --- can you fix that?

After I steam cleaned the carpet, I gave it a solid dose of vitamin D (left it outside under the sun) for a few hours.

just clean and shampoo it as best you can and if that doesnt work take it to a detailing shop and have them do it. foaming carpet cleaner does a pretty good job. cars sitting around with the windows shut get musty inside and can grow mold if it gets damp from condensation. I really dont think you need to do anything as drastic as pulling the interior apart. you can look for mice in the tunnel through the shifter hole and make sure theres nothing in the smugglers box and behind the dash area

Beware of Febreze. This is the chemical analysis of the nasties:

Acetaldehyde: on California’s Prop 65 list for cancer and reproductive toxicity.
•Ethyl Acetate: a chemical toxic to the brain and nervous system.
•BHT: linked with neurotoxicity, hormone disruption, allergies, and irritation to the skin, eyes, or lungs.
•Propylene glycol: linked with allergies and skin and eye irritation.
•1,3-dichloro-2-propanol: also used in flame retardants, resins, plastics, and rubber; has been linked with cancer in animal studies, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.

I rent with Hertz every week. They use Febreeze in their cars. No wonder I have headaches after long rides.
