What type of paint?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a spray paint for the black engine deck lid grill?

Mine is looking pretty weathered and I was wondering what type of paint sticks well to it.

A product like SEM Color Coat in Satin Black will work well.

The number 1 & 2 & 3... Thing is remove the grill and PREP. it very well. Clean all of the nooks and crannies first with a degreaser like Simple Green and a tooth brush.
Follow this with a light scotch brite pad. Rinse and let it air dry.

Next use a wax and grease remover like SEM Solve.

Finally, I would reccomend using an adhesion promoter like Bulldog.

If you just do a "quickie" clean and spray paint you will be sad later when it peels. Big mess and hassle to have to completely strip and start over.

That grill sees a lot of engine heat cycles plus getting blasted by UV from the sun anytime it's outside.

Happy refinishing.

Careful with the solvents especially the degreaser as it is absorbed through the skin use good gloves long sleeves safety googles and and good solvent mask.

Best way is hard to find and expensive.

Clean with acetone. Paint with satin black 7777 Rustolium spray paint. Great stuff.

Home Depot has it for$4.00 or less. It is very very good! By resto friends love it.

Tell everyone it is SEM.

I have had better luck with products like "Back to Black"... never peels, etc.

Paint on the plastic almost always peels.

Remove the grill and treat it.

Back to Black is a plastic cleaner, isn't it? Does it also dye the plastic to help cover up the whitish, faded areas?

Yes, it takes the grille back to black... gets rid of the gray/white stuff. You may have to re-apply after a couple years but no peeling.

I painted mine with Wurth Satin Black 17 years ago and it still looks fine.

Recently stripped all the flaking paint off my grill and tried the 'Back to Black.'
Turned out exactly as I had hoped, nice, uniform, deep black and like you said will just have to retreat when the time comes.
