Actually I can't even call it a stereo, as there is only ONE speaker!
My 1970 911 has this p.o.s. am radio with a single speaker in the dash. Could anyone please explain to me how to pull out the head unit? Also, would later model door panels fit my car so I can get some speaker mounts? Trying to upgrade sound here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Nick |

if it's a shaft style radio you need to pop off the knobs then spin off the nuts behind them. there will probably be another nut under the face trim which will come off after you remove the first nuts. then drop it out from the rear of the dash.
if it's a DIN radio you may need a certain tool depending on the brand. what kind is it? can you post a pic? the din radios mount in a sleeve which will have a "clips" on either side that hold it in. also check for a backstrap under the dash that will suppoert the rear of the radio with both the shafted and DIN type.

Bell: Since you seem to have some expertise in DIN radios, I thought I'd ask you this question--
I have an Eclipse 5440 radio in my 84 Targa. The CD player skips terribly, and I don't like the looks, so I'm going to replace it. I popped off the front bezel, and it looks like all that's holding it in place are two small right angled clips, the ends of which fit into small holes on each side of the frame surrounding the radio. Aside from the back strap, is that all that's holding it in place? Thanks. Nickalex86: What kind of replacement radio are you going to install?

From my experience removing and installing several of these, the clips will be all that holds the radio, unless, as previously mentioned, there is a back strap. Use a thin tool to bend the clips free of the retaining slots and the radio should slide reght out. To replace with a new radio, you will probably have to remove the sleeve and replace with a new one suited for the new radio. These have numerous, different size tabs that you bend outward to achieve a snug fit. To remove the old sleeve, just bend the tabs inward and it should slid out. It's obvious when you look at it. Good luck.

Chuck: Wanna come up to Northridge and give me a hand? If the C182 is a Cessna 182, I'll pick you up at VNY. (Just kidding!!) Thanks for the advice. The radio is this weekend's project. Regards.

an eclipse will either skip all the time or none of the time, i think its time to replace it ![]() there will be one small "clip" on either side of the face which attatch to the cage mounted in the dash. just put a thin screwdriver (or anything like it) in between the clip and unclip it, make sure both sides are unclipped then simply pull it out. you can reacj under the dash to push from behing also). it will come right out, if it's tight don't pry on the face, go from behind. i've used a blaupunkt toronto for 65 years now, it's a great peice which never skips and looks suave. they don't make them anymore though, you can probably find them online somewhere.

My Eclipse is so bad that it skips even when I go over the little dots that separate lanes on the freeway (and it has a rear brace too). I also think it's underpowered when the Targa top is off. I've already purchased a replacement, so the Eclipse is outta here this weekend.

ron as i said before...you got one of the lucky soldiers
![]() i pulled the system out of my turbo omni and the 911 (since i'm selling it). i'm going to do some pretty cool custom stuff to the 924s since i have a mountain of audio equipment sitting around and i won't feel too guilty modifying the car. here are some pics i forgot i had of a custom vented box i built a couple of weeks ago.

All you have to do is park your car in SW DC and the radio will be removed free of charge, and the good part is that the make and model does not seem to matter

Jeez, Marc, I'm wiping off the coffee I just sprayed on my monitor. That's pretty funny (and true).

How old are those Eclipses that are skipping? I had read online somehwere that they fixed their skipping problem. I'm hoping so, anyway. I recently pulled out an older Blaupunkt Miami Beach that sounded pretty muddy and replaced it with an Eclipse 8051 running through an Eclipse amp. It sounds great and no skipping problems so far, but it's pretty new. We'll see how it does tomorrow on the NoVa fun run, but the screaming line of flat sixes may drown everything out.
By the way, when I got the Blaupunkt out it had a sticker on the side saying it was made in Malaysia. -------- Bill '88 911 Coupe |

the only blaupunkts that are actually still made in germany are the top of the line ones (all the 7-series like the toronto), i never liked the newer models after the toronto, the just lost the good looks.
i just picked up a sydney (7-series cassette) for $75 brand new, i have the matching 10 disc which will be going into the 924s. i'm going to find another toronto for my early project though. from my experience it's every eclipse model i've ever dealt with. like i said though, if it doesn't skip it probably never will.....but if it does it would need the entire transport/laser section replaced to remedy this. eclipse radios are great performers and i owned many of them before i got my toronto, i'm just a believer in sticking with what works for you, blau has heen my personal unit of choice for years.

I'm pulling out the Eclipse 5440. It's not on the Eclipse website anymore, so I'm assuming it's a few years old. It skips badly. I'm replacing it with a Blaupunkt Heidelberg, which has a clean black front to it. It will go nicely with the interior. It's made in Portugal, by the way, so at least it's from the same continent as Germany.

Bell (or anyone else who knows):
The Eclipse manual might as well be written in Greek when it comes to explaining which color wires go where. Can you, either here or by e-mail, tell me which wire goes to which speaker+, speaker-, antenna, etc.? Email is sib100@earthlink.net. Thanks for the help!

the colors in the car i do not know without looking at them, use a multi meter or a 12v test light (test light will be MUCH easier and won't hurt anything at the radio harness).
find your constant 12v with key off.......connect to the yellow wire on the new radio. find your switched 12v(turns on/off with key)......connect to the red. ground will most likely be brown.......connect to the black turn your parking lights on and check for illumination 12v......connect to the orange (if not using it insulate it off) on your anttenna there is a thin gauge black wire......connect this to the blue wire to power up the antenna if you have amplifiers connect the blue w/white stripe to turn them on, if you're not using it cap it off. speakers....... you can use a 9 volt battery to "pop" the speakers to figure out which are which in the car, don't hold the battery on the leads for long, just make them pop. look at the popping speaker and if the cone moves out then the positive is the wire touching the + on the 9volt. right front.........grey +.........greyw/black stripe - left front...........white +.......white/black stripe - right rear..........purple +......purple/blk strp - left rear............green +.......green/blk strp - i always do all power connections first then move on to the speakers, you don't want to accidentally send 12v into a speaker lead from the radio these colors are standard for most all aftermarket stereos nowadays, there are only a few cheap brands that don't use these colors. it is very important to wire the speakers in phase, if they are not you will lose most all of your bass and have a realy crappy soundstage. hope this helps

That's exactly the information I needed. It'll save me a lot of wire tracing and testing. You da man! By the way, I meant to say earlier, nice work on those speaker enclosures. Quality craftsmanship! Thanks again. Scott

cool......let me know if you run ino any snags on the install.
i'm always on here at many different times throughout the evenings/late, having digital cable spoils me ![]() i just got in from an evening of partying for my 30th birthday.....friends, free beer, and girls.....what more can i say ![]() thanks for the kind words on the enclosure, i've been an audiofile longer than i've been installing (11 years) and once and a while i get ecxited and build something nice for customers, i never have the motivation to make my own cars have a killer install since i do it all day. i didn't want to cut up my 911.......but since i'll soon have a 924s i won't feel bad making mods to the watercooled 4 by making something sweet for for once. i'll post pics as that progresses, i think i'm going to do something pretty slick. the rs replica i'm going to build will probably have no audio at all.....except from the 6 in the rear
