Moving to Europe
My wife and I are thinking of moving to Europe, possibly France. I have a 1970 911E with the usual upgrades and Weber carbs. It's a solid car, my daily driver here in Florida, mechanically really solid but could use new paint. The question is - is it worthwhile taking it with us or should we sell it and look for another when we get there. I have no idea what it would cost to ship it or if there are emission standards that would have to be taken care of. Any advice appreciated.

Emissions is most likely not going to be the problem. In France they have a very tough general inspection program for cars that are older than 5 (?) years. It would have to be a very solid car with absolutely no rust on the chassis. You would have to make some mods for the headlights etc. but it shouldn't be too difficult.
On the other hand, finding a good used old 911 would be very difficult in my opinion. Rust and fast driving on the freeway usually takes it's toll in Europe. You don't see that many older cars anymore, especially since the start of those inspection programs.

Allan,
If your car is in good condition, take it with you. At least you know all the problems the car has. Shipping to Europe should be less than $1000. The only problem I really forsee is paying for gas at about $4.50/ gallon. Where are you moving to?

My "gut" reply is: take your trusted car with you! That is, if you are personally satisfied with it. Even though it should be possible to buy one over here, each purchase is a risk (believe me: Porsche dealers/sellers are amongst the most dangerous in existance!). You will have to go through the technical control etc. but there are scores of U.S. imports driving in Europe, and they passed... Try asking the question (what formalities to expect in France) on a French Porsche amateur website
www.club911.net , if you don't speak French and if you wish, I'll ask it for you (in French) and come back to you with the (translated in English) replies, that is, if you are REALLY considering making such a move!

Yes we are really considering retiring to Europe. France is a natural for us as French is my second language and my wife's first. We have friends in Toulouse so we are researching the area in France to the southwest of Toulouse toward the Pyrenees.
