Hello everybody,
This Sunday, 9/22, is our mountain ride! We have gotten good response from about two dozen people on this website from all over NC. We are pumped up, ready to go NOW!! Specific route directions are posted at WWW.Go-Michael.Com/Drive in a printable pdf file, but here is a general description. We are meeting at Jim Smolka's place near Hickory at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning the 22nd. We will then go to Morganton, up 181 to the Parkway, around Boone on Shull's Mill Rd., 194 and 221. After lunch in Blowing Rock we will hit 194 toward Jefferson. Then split up heading home. Anyone in the Boone area that wants to meet us at Price Park on the Parkway, we should be there between 10:30 and 11:00 if we get out of Hickory on time. If anyone wants to meet in Charlotte and ride to Hickory there is a group meeting at I-77, Exit 25 in the Target parking lot, 7:50'ish AM and departing at 8 AM. There is a Texaco gas station there also in case you need to top off. To caravan to Hickory from the Greensboro area contact P-THOMAS (Paul) at 888.2459 Here are the directions to Jim's place in Hickory: Directions, from I-40, Hickory, NC Take Exit 123 to Hwy 321 South Stay in the right lane for 0.25 miles on Hwy 321 Exit Right onto Hwy 127 South. There should be a CVS on the right at the first light. After the CVS go through 3 more red lights. Look for Deerfield Subdivision on the right. (if you cross a big bridge, you have gone too far) 5892 Deerfield Lane (4th house on the right) If you are coming from Charlotte, try these directions: Take I-85 south to Hwy 321 North (Gastonia). Exit 37 Turn Left onto Hwy 10 Go approximately 6 miles on Hwy 10. Turn right onto Hwy 127 North (Exxon Station) Go approximately 2 miles. Turn Left into Deerfield Subdivision. 5892 Deerfield Lane Hope to see you all there and if you need to get in touch with me call 704.564.1272 Thanks, Tom (here is a map for an idea of the route) ![]()

One thing I forgot to mention, lunch is plannd to be a Woodlands Bar-B-Que in Blowing Rock. We can eat there for about $10 a piece and it seems like they may be a little picky about using plastic, so bring some cash .

Latest weather forcast I've seen is that it might get "iffy" late in the day with "Scattered T-showers. Hopefully that means we should be ok.

My car is together, but the PO did not have any velocity stacks on my carbs (Webers) so I am having a hard time trying to balance them. I ordered some stacks from CB Performance but they aren't even supposed to ship until Friday.
If anyone has any suggestions on an alternate method of getting a unisyn to fit (a tube or hose of some sort?) or has a set of stacks I could borrow just to do the adjustment (I have 40mm IDFs I think, the stacks are individual and fit onto 2 bolts sticking up through the carb body) my chances of joining the fun increase dramatically! Thanks for reading! Brian (I'm in Matthews BTW)

I am in and know at at least one other that will be there.
Who cares if it rains. Our cars won't melt.

The PCA meeting tonight may have added a couple more cars.
Marcesq, I don't have a definite count yet. If everyone that said yes goes, around 20. But last minute things come up, so I am looking for between 10 and 15. I think our plans are pretty set to stay here in NC this weekend but you all are welcome to join us. Or routes are posted if you are serious about a meeting place. But I would love to do a combined group sometime in the future. There are some great roads in VA, I've done a couple of driving weekends in the Independence/Galax/Mt Rogers area. May be should make a plan... Tom

Weather Forecast
I've been carefully watching Weather.Com for Sunday's forecast. It has really improved over the last 48 hours. Just your basic 30% chance of isolated thunderstorms.
See everyone Sunday! ![]()

Sorry I wasn't clear, I was thinking about a future outing, where we could meet in between. Maybe at another famous BBQ place. ![]() You all have fun, we will, now 17 strong. Take care. Marc

A multi-state Pelican-head get together would be pretty cool. It sounds like we'd be able to generate quite a turnout. Maybe in October, early November, or sometime in the Spring?

rain? what rain.
Ok, this is probably the last post here before the ride. I wanted to let anyone checking fo last minute stuff that I will be making the trip rain or shine. My car is done, new paint, all put back together and I am going driving!! I think osidak and wcbalance from the Charlotte area are going rain or not as well. Hopefully the chancy weather will not deter anyone else.
See you all in the morning! Tom

Congratualtions on getting the car back together. No question you would complete it!!!!
I've been watching the weather very closely the last couple of days and the forecast for The Drive tomorrow is actually better now than it was a few days ago. My guess is we may see a few isolated showers here and there, but overall pretty good driving weather.

Hopefully the weather will be better than it was today up here in Boone. Rained pretty much the whole day, overcast, damp, foggy..you get the idea. Tommorrow should be a bit better, but I'll tell ya...the Charlotte weather guys rarely forcast the mountains correctly! I may try to catch up with everyone at Price Park...maybe Woodlands..just depends.
Try this for weather info Rays weather center

It was great meeting all you guys and getting to push our Porsche to the limits. I heard the 944 driver was having some engine problems. Hope all is ok with them. We lostt one other driver in Morganton. Hope all was ok there as well.
Got a ticket on the way home.... Started to rain on me when I had the roof off. Pulled into a strip mall and put the roof on. I was pulling back out on the 321 when I got hit for not wearing my seat belt. I was putting it on while I was sitting at the light. Oh well. I post some pictures at the following link Pictures from the NC Pelican Drive Can anyone host a few video clips that are about 9.5 megs each.
