help! car won't power off
I tried to start my P-car today at lunch and the ignition key felt funny. There wasn't any resistance at the end where you normally would start cranking the starter. I turned the key off and tried again. Nothing.
As bothersome as this is the worse part was with the key completely out of the ignition the car was still powered up. The oil and alternator lights were on plus you could here some type of whining in engine compartment (what was that??). After trying for a half-hour to get the key to grab hold of something I finally started worrying about my battery going dead so I disconnnected the battery. My worse fear is the tow truck (flat bed) driver is going to screw up my car. I doubt they have much experience towing Porsches in Northern MI. What's broke? I would guess that I need a new ignition key switch but could it be something else.

If you can get a hold of a spare ignition switch, (just the round electric component), you can plug your harness into it to drive home. Use a screwdriver to turn the switch. You will need to unlock the steering wheel with the key.
When your at home, pull off the round switch on the back of the ignition switch (two almost unreachable screws). You then should be able to see if the problem is the mechanical or electrical part of the assembly. |

The whining noise is normal when the ignition is turned on in SC's. The noise comes from the CD (capacitive discharge) box that makes the spark for your engine. No worries there. It definitely sounds like your ignition switch is focked. A used one should be cheap.

The pin between the tumbler and the mechanical part of the switch was snapped off. The good thing is that I can now start my car. The bad thing is that I have to use a screw driver!
Any hints on how to get the steering wheel lock and tumbler mechanism assembly removed without taking the dash completely apart? There is one set screw that I can see but it is in there really tight. I ruined a small screw driver trying to get it out and now it won't budge.
