Where is the power window control module?
 

I have an 1986 Carrera with erratic power window/sunroof operation. I get all or nothing, which leads me to believe it's the module (the thing that lets you operate the windows and sunroof with the key off - until you open the doors). Where is this module located? I see a 'power window relay' in the front trunk relay/fuse panel (position 1 if I remember). Is that it?

There is no connection with the sunroof and door locks. Unless you have a aftermarket alarm system fitted the erratic operation is likely to be two seperate problems. Need more precise details to diagnose.

On my '87 Carrera, the power window relay is in the position you described.

The far left position is power window relay, then seat belt buzzer relay, then an empty position on right for reasons unknown to me.

Depending on production date, the relay is is either directly behind the fuel gauge, closest to the driver's door (late production). Or it is the second round relay in the fuse panel in the front trunk (early production). Since you mentioned sunroof trouble as well, you might want to check the connection of the very first fuse on the front trunk panel (the one closest to the the cockpit), as that fuse is for both the window and sunfroof operation.

The relays behind the gauges in your `87 should go as follows (left to right):

-power window relay.
-warning buzzer relay.
-turn signal/hazard light relay (hidden behind buzzer).
-windscreen washer relay.

Thank you for the above posting. That definitely agrees with the Bentley manual. What perplexes me is that the windscreen washer jets work fine...maybe the relay spot is for the optional heavy duty system (option deleted on mine) and/or the headlight washers (another option deleted on mine)

Thanks for the lead. The relay I was looking for (the power window control module) is indeed behind the fuel gauge in my car. I jumped pins 30 and 87 and the windows and sunroof now work all the time (even with the key off).

Fyi, the control unit is indeed connected to the door switches - on 1986 to 1989 Carreras it allows you to operate the windows or sunroof after you turn off the key but before you open the doors.
