Front suspension Klunk help!!

911 1969 2.0T

Have a bad case of front suspension klunk noise.

The klunk is a hard metallic "stick and slip" sound and can be reproduced by putting the car on stands and jacking up the left front wheel. When doing this noticeable tension is built up followed by a sudden release and a "klunk" sound.

a

fter reading many posts with similar klunk symptoms, I decide to track down the source:

Process of elimination:

1, Disconnect Sway-bar and links ---> Klunk still present.
2, Disconnect Steering ball joint ---> Klunk still present.
3, Disconnect Ball joint /Spindle connection ---> Klunk still present.

At this point, the control arm is completely isolated. When the control arm is forced up and down by jacking, the "Klunk" is very hard. and it does not always return to the bottom resting position when the jack is removed ?? Crazy....

The bushings may or may not be 45 years old, but still I am curious to find out what component in the control arm assembly is making this very hard "Klunk".

Does anyone have any experience with this??

No experience with that particular "klunk" but it sounds like you have isolated it to either the strut/shock assembly itself or the torsion bar assembly. I would try to eliminate one of them--maybe remove the torsion bar or at least disconnect the rear cap so that it isn't involved and see if the clunk is still there? Might be a good time to look at the bushings anyway--they could be so worn that the T-bar is binding.

HTH and GL with the mystery,
TT

Problem located

The car actually have Polyurethane bushings, and the metal of the control arm have corroded and expanded inside the poly bushing and expanding it effectively imobilizing the control arm.

Cleaned the rust and bushing mounted back on the car, "Klunk" is gone.
