Ok, looking at the print for the 1970 (SL35) there is an auxiliary starting relay off the solenoid wire, but it is in parallel to the starter solenoid.
If it is faulty it could be draining the circuit enough to not allow the starter to spin?

This part of the print, I believe you can download this one from Pelican

Item 52 is the auxiliary starting relay that is probably clicking.
Follow the path of the yellow wire in the print and you will see it.

Prints for the 70 aren't on Pelican but they might be here, Look for SL35 :)

dumb question: does the car have an aftermarket alarm system installed?

rick-l 06-24-2014 05:45 AM

Harbor Freight has a coupon for a free multimeter.

I am late to this party. I think what you need to do next is check the voltage at the starter wiring(underneath the car) when someone turns the key.

I am wondering if this could be due to a problem with your ignition switch. Just try to get the voltage from underneath first. I think this will send you in the correct direction.

Also to add to this, there is a white/grey wire that goes from item 52 (starting relay) to item 12 (electromagnetic control valve). This could be an issue as well.
FYI my wiring legend says that the starting relay and control valve are on the E and S models only. My '71 911t doesn't have these.

Kidrock

You must have remember my problem.

Exactly the same symptoms, click and nothing until I bypass the alarm.

Sporttracguy 06-24-2014 08:16 AM

The car does not have an aftermarket alarm...

I'll have to put the wife to work and try to test voltage

I think I may have found some light at the end of this tunnel, I just hope it isn't a train.

I have a large gauge black wire coming from the drivers side to the battery. There were a few loose cables left here from the PO who did the battery re location/delete. I asked about this wire in another post but couldn't get a clear answer so I am going to try again here.

The cable is black and large gauge so I initially assumed it was a ground but the more that I have been looking at these wiring diagrams, it looks like it could be a dedicated hot lead to the starter motor? I want to confirm that is what this is before I go shorting this large gauge wire and frying my electrical system.

From what I can tell, it looks to be the same color/size as the wire at the starter. I looked under the dash to see if I could trace it but it seems to enter lower in the cab and my assumption is it goes through the tunnel to the starter.

My hunch is that this is the simple solution to my seemingly complicated problem.

Here is a shot of where the wire enters the cab from the trunk..just behind the gas tank.

Thanks again for all your help and patience

Yes for some odd reason Porsche pick black for it. Put a + lead of a voltmeter on it and the black to ground and it should read 12Volts

I slip some red heat shrink on it.

Little update:

Connected the the loose +cable to the battery and re installed the starter. Everything is connected and I've tested that there is over 12 volts at the starter but the symptoms are the same.

I turn the key, hear the fuel pump and a click at the back of the car, it sounds like a relay click.

Next step is to trace the yellow wire and see where the voltage is being lost...

She's alive!!!

I was at my whits end, even though I cleaned and checked the tranny ground with no results, I replaced it with a new one as well as both of the relays in the engine bay... still nothing.

I started tracing the yellow wire back from the starter motor and although I had removed the contacts and cleaned everything I figured I would check the connections again...I ended up popping open the 14 pin connector housing, exposing all of the wires and found that the yellow wire had re seated itself in a dead spot in the housing. Put everything back correctly, connected up the battery and she started up stronger than ever!

Thanks for all of the help. Although I probably threw a few more parts at the car than was needed....The 44 year old parts that were replaced were probably on borrowed time anyways and were going to need an upgrade sooner or later.
