MSD 6AL Huge benefit!!
Well guys, I just finished replacing the fickle Perma tune ignition on my 78 SC with a superior MSD 6AL with adjustable rev limiter and plug and play simplicity. The result was amazing!!
Before this upgrade, I would have a hunting idle at cold start. It would sputter and backfire like an old grumpy witch. The minute I started the engine after installing the new ignition, and I do mean, the very first minute, the idle stayed at a steady 1100 rpm's and never fluttered or dropped. The acceleration is smooth and crisp and the throttle response is faster. I always got on the gas a little bit while going over a highway overpass on the way home and it did okay with the old system, but now the torque delivery is better and there is definitely more grunt going up the hill. the Unit was bought from ebay brand new for about $170.00 shipped. If anyone is having similar cold start issues from an otherwise well tuned, well maintained car, I would recommend trying the MSD. I am not affiliated in any way with the company. I am simply expressing how pleased I am with their product. I am still running the stock Bosch coil so my next add on will be the MSD coil. I will be adding one to my classic Mini as well. ![]() Good luck and motor on! Norm

I had the same experience going from the Bosch CDI to a Daytona-Sensors CD! ignition and coil setup.
The rev limiter is really a nice feature as you found out. I would recommend getting a coil built for CDI and something better than the Bosch. Did you run the constant on 12vdc to the starter wire from the battery? You may also want to regap the plugs on the next plug change. Good luck with this setup

Nice air intake ! Though when you change to msd it doesn't help when PO has changed/adjusted timing and fiddled with wiring :/ .
Totally agree so crisp and bang on, though I have heard there are pirated msd units out there so buy smart. |

for another $50 you get a warrenty.
i hope you got the one that has the dial in rev limiter instead of the one you plug in various resitors to change it. the new style is really nice. it also has an LED that shows you you are getting signal from the dist. i have put in 2 MSD's. yes i like them and you get a heck of a bang for your $$$ but i have never noticed a difference. one was in a 77s and the other a 930. i have heard the MSD can lean out the mixture due to the multiple spark, which sounds like what may have happened with your car. surging is a good sign you are running rich. be sure to check timing after you put in an MSD, 1100 should be cold idle, hot should be below 1000. glad it hear it runs better. why does it look like your engine is sitting low? the rubber boot on the AFM should be closer to the top of the engine bay. nice looking intake runners
