drive without speedometer?
My speedometer is now with North Hollywood Speedometer for repair. I was wondering if driving the 911 without a speedometer would cause any electronic or electrical issues, such as the DME expecting to receive a signal from the unit. I can use a GPS for speed information.
I tried to change the odometer gear by the method recommended in a long Pelican post, and, putting it back together, snapped the shaft and the needle. I used the method of trying to remove and replace the screws under the faceplate by bending the faceplate up without removing the needle. All went well until replacing the screws back in under the plate ... NHS told me that that is a common repair job for them. They must get lots of business from DIY speedometer repairers like myself ... *sigh* |
I (personally) do not think that it would pose a problem, as long as the connection in the tunnel (to the transmission speedo sensor) is disconnected. I am in the same place you are: I sent my speedo to NH speedo based on the suggestions from this forum - and I would drive it with out the speedo. Good point about the DME relay - my car doesn't have this.
The other thing that I would do is cover the wire connections that go to the back of the speedo. |
There are no inputs to the DME from the speedometer.

I understand that in post 1090 911 models the speedometer is connected to a rev-limiter. That may not work with the speedometer removed. So, just watch your revs and you should b OK.
