SC Cab Wind Deflector - Best Investment!

I broke down and purchased a wind deflector for '83 Cabriolet and it may be one of the best investments I've made on my car - and I have made plenty. Functionally, it works perfectly and I expect to get another month (or possibly two!) of top down driving in my Cab. Historically the cabin was extremely windy and on cold days it was unbearable. Now with the deflector my SC is similar to the targa I recently sold. It brings the SC Cab into modern day! Aesthetically it looks original equipment.

Here are some pics:

It is the one from Classic Additions in England. They sent me one originally and I sent it back and received this one. It took several iterations of modifications to get it high enough and close enough to the back set to get it as functional as possible. You will note an extension piece I created to elevate it about 12-13 cm from where it was designed. I also used an alternate mounting point instead of their recommended mounting point. I drilled into the back seat belt mount and used this as the side mounting points. So far so good but I may have to reinforce this to give it more stability - but so far so good.

Any further questions let me know.

New mounting location........

Vance,

Could you post some pictures how you did the new mounting? More or less, how much did it cost you including shipping to Ohio? Thanks.

Tony

Looks like the same I installed in my '86 Carrera. I purchased it two years ago (from England), I have to pull the invoice to refresh my memory how much I paid for it. Here are some pics how it is installed in my car.

I have one for my '88 3.2 and I love it. Amazing difference in terms of wind and noise.

Mine is the Porsche part, and it installs differently than this one.

As I realized looking at the pics from Autoban, the modifications I did are only required on the SC, and not on a Carrera (not sure if this is all of them?). I could not mount mine as high and had to create the spacer.

I think it was $300 shipped to Ohio- I purposely forget then I do not feel as bad.

The mounting point is the rear seat belt holder.

My take on the install

I have attached the text from an e-mail to Adrian of Classic Additions outlining changes that I made to their wind deflector mounts. As this thread has pointed out the deflector is a good product that can be made better. So hear it goes.

Adrian, I have attached a few pictures for you and included some measurements also. You will also be receiving a second e-mail with additional photos.

Drivers side (LH drive) 40mm from the face of your mounting point in side panel to the body of your pin housing

Passenger side (RH side) 57mm from the face of your mounting point in side panel to the body of your pin housing

Center pin 90mm from the face of your mounting point at back seat to the body of your pin housing

As you can see the pin lengths are not equal left and right as you would expect. You could most likely arrive at a single pin length that would work for both sides. I chose to make mine to match the differences. You’ll also notice that I added 50mm spacers to get the screen up higher. I would have liked it another 10-20mm, but I thought I might be putting undue stress on your mount. I have a friend in Philadelphia that wants one of these for his car. It would be nice if he didn’t have to make the same mods as I did. Feel free to e-mail back with any comments or suggestions on improvements. P.S., ultimately the screen quiets the interior quite a bit and does reduce the wind significantly.

If anyone is interested in additional info for install please PM me and I will supply a list of materials, etc.
