Installing a Grill Badge with A/C Condenser
 

This is not rocket science, but I thought other newbies might benefit by seeing more of a pictorial.

My car is a 1984 3.2 with the A/C condenser still intact. I got a nice PCA grill badge last Christmas as a gift, but kept putting off installing it as it seems to be a little more work than I was willing to do. Fast forward to this weekend and I finally decided to go for it.

After looking at the possible locations to unbolt I gathered the tools
1. 8mm wrench
2. 8mm hex socket wrench with extender
3. H5 Extra long hex bit socket
4. Philips screw driver (not pictured)

I did not want to undo any bolts that would impact the lid hinges as I have read the hassle of making shim adjustments to get them to fit correctly. I identified 4 locations

Did the driver side first (Location 1)...used the socket wrench with extender

Passenger side next (location 2)...used the wrench on the inside nut and the socket on the other side as it was originally turning, but not loosening

Location 3 was the bracket next to the engine light...philips head screws came out easy

Location 4 required the extra long h5 hex bit (easier to untorque and torque)

This is how much space you have to work with to install the grill badges. It is helpful to put a spare section of carpeting to prevent any damage to the condenser if it fell or touched the fan housing.

Installing the PCA grill badge took a bit longer because the nuts were so tiny it would slip off before I could get the screws to find the groove...wound up dropping one and fortunately had a screw driver with a magnetic end to fish it out of the engine compartment.
BTW, if you order one of those grill badges from ebay or competing sites, they will come with 4 inch screws and you will need a dremel to cut them down to fit and not hit the condenser. Ask me how I know!

To put it all back together I actually started from location 1 through location 4 to get the condenser to stay up without another set of hands. So in this case re-installation is not the reverse of your steps.

JB I can relate as it seems like a lot of work for putting a decorative piece of hardware! That is why it has taken me this long :)
I have learned that nothing on our cars is an easy fix with the exception of replacing fuses or bulbs. My next project is replacing the power antenna. With the crazy puzzle of wires coming from the firewall to under my dash, I know this won't be a walk in the park!

It might be obvious but in the 4th and 5th pics the bolts were already removed (open holes) adjacent to the bolts holding the lid. I had before and after pics, but the site limits you to 10 pics so I just left the "after pics"

You can see my PCA badge in the same position on my 1973.5T. Thats my grandson Finn. They always add a classic look.

Thanks Bob! Love the pic, as it is never too early to get the young ones indoctrinated into our beloved Porsches! I am still looking to add a 3.2 badge to balance the look!

Some of us are so neurotic about restricting air flow to condenser that we attached a simple aluminum bar behind the rear license plate and added badges there!

That is a good idea. How are those badges attached? Did you weld A bracket extension from the license plate holder? Doesn't look like double sided tape.

No, just drilled 2 holes in an aluminum strip to match the license plate bracket bolts, and long enough each end to take the small bolts holding the badges.
Easily removable and no damage to car.

Stumbled upon this thread while searching for a power antenna thread. Used this to quickly install my 50 year 911 badge in time for today's PCA Concours display near Seattle. I put some electrical tape on the threads to hide the bright threads from sight.
