how to install front bumper on 73 911
 

How do you install the front, rubber bumper (smile?) on a long hood.

Do you take the rubber off, install the metal part and put the rubber back on?

Or do you mark where the screws should go and attach from the inside of the bumper out. or other.

The aluminum deco profile (metal piece) which holds the rubber trim, has a slot on the back, in which slide T-bolts (available from our host) that correspond to the holes drilled in the bumper. The profile is attached to the bumper with nuts on the T-bolts, that are accessed from the back side of the bumper, and it's much easier to have the rubber attached to the profile before installation to the bumper.

That makes perfect sense. 4 t- bolts I would think to be sufficient. Two other questions.

there are bolts on both ends already, see pic. What should be done with them. Also, there are larger holes pre drilled on the bumper. Are these for the bumperetts? Not sure I am going to all the way and reinstall the bumperetts but am thinking about it.

Chris,

Those 2 studs at the ends are molded into the deco rubber. You'll need to pull the rubber away from the aluminum at either end to get the stud out of the way of sliding the T-bolts into their channel. After you've inserted the T-bolts, put the rubber back in place. The studs use the same size nuts as the T-bolts, and need to be attached to the bumper as well.

And yes, the larger holes are for the bumper guard bolts. Are you planning on installing the plastic beading that goes around the perimeter of the aluminum on the bumper side? It provides a nice finished look to the trim, but boy is it a pain in the ass to install.

Don't know what plastic beading you are referring to. Pic is not of my car but represents what I think it should look like.

Thumbs up or down on putting the bumperetts back on. I am leaning toward no.

I just re-did the front trim for my 72, and I'll post a pic of it tomorrow. It's not mounted on the bumper yet, so you can get an idea of the plastic trim.

And yes, I'd lose the bumper guards. While they're original, they don't do the front of the car any favors. Hang on to them, though.

I am about to order the t bolts and some other stuff to mount the front bumper trim (chrome and black rubber bumper) to the already mounted bumper. Still not sure where the beading would go. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of pics of the beading. It inserts (grudgingly) into the groove around the perimeter of the deco aluminum. Part # is 999-911-198-40, and is sold by the meter. I don't recall whether I bought 3 or 4 meters to do both the front and rear bumper trims, but I had a couple feet left over. Hope this helps.

Just as an FYI, the beading is installed in one piece on the front trim. It loops around on the curved ends of the aluminum piece. Best to install it so that the ends meet on the bottom edge of the trim.

Any clue how the rocker deco rubber gets slid into place? Even well lubed up it only went about 12” and we can’t get it to budge anymore.
