Motor compartment sound/heat pad 1980 SC

My pad has fallen down and I want to remove it - I may replace it later. It seems to be mostly in one piece, the glue has failed and the pad dropped down.
My questions: how is the pad attached on the bottom, can it just be pulled out?

It's just tucked in at the bottom, it'll pull out.

That is a messy job. When you pull it out dry foam gets everywhere. Put a drop cloth over your engine to make clean up easier.
Scrape off as much of the old foam as possible from the bulhead before installing a new one. Use high heat adhesive.

When I went to pull out the pad I realized that it seems to be in one piece... This got me thinking - can it be reattached without dropping the motor? Am I barking up the wrong tree and should probably not deal with the old pad? At a crossroad and need to choose a direction - your thoughts appreciated.
Happy 4th to all.

Get rid of the old one, it'll only continue to disintegrate.

I replaced the pad when I had my 1980 SC. I just did a partial engine drop of a few inches(maybe four or so). scrape off all the old stuff, cover the engine with a blanket as mentioned. A new pad looks so much better.

Sound pad removal........

Wayne,

If the old sound pad is beginning to disintegrate, remove and dispose it. Don't worry about the mess it will drop on the engine. Pull it up and out. Then use an air compressor and vacuum cleaner to collect and remove the dust/dirt.

An engine partial drop would give you more room but not required to removed it. Installation is completely different with the engine installed. Good luck.

Tony

I removed the old one and installed a new one in my '74 without even a partial drop.

If it's only a sound issue - then let the flat six music begin :-)

the firewall inside the cabin gets hot and don't know how much of that is due to lack of the pad, but you are in the driver seat so who cares.

Not my luck - had to work at it. Will wait to install new pad.

Thanks again to all. Happy 4th - mine will be a bit noisier ;-)
