This is the car that I'll be buying next month and hauling down to NC. Any expert options on it?

I'm a little worried at what looks like rust towards the top of the engine bay and along the right.

Well, I'm certainly no expert, but it looks like a bit of work, Tim ;)

It reminds me of Jack Olsen's "before" pics. What have you got planned, resto or hotrod? Whatever you do, don't change the colour! Keep it original there. It's a good starting point, with 15" Fuchs and an RS front spoiler. It looks like a lot of fun ahead!

If I find the paint as the original paint then I'll probably keep it though I really would like a silver 911. What I'm planning right now is just to get it on the road, keeping it as original as possible. It's not the original engine so I'm not too worried about making it concourse or anything.

I was wondering about that front spoiler.. it didn't loook original. the other thing was the 901 106 101 on the fan shroud. Is that just the fan shroud's part #?

That front spoiler is definitely not original and I would guess that it is fiberglass, but I would still keep it. Yes the number on the fan housing is just a part number. Good things I saw: previous owner did not remove anything from the engine even the warm up housing is there. Most people, including me, just remove the warm up housing. Also like the period aftermarket wood steering wheel!

I"m not sure what the warm up housing is but I know that the owner (my uncle) isn't mechanicly inclinded so he wouldn't take anything off. So when the head gasket blew he just parked it.

What I'm planning to do right now is to haul it down here to NC from WI and rebuild the engine and maybe the transmission. After 2 years of sitting I don't really know how good of a condition it's in mechanicly

From the picture, it's hard to tell what, if any "options" are on it. Now my "opinion" of it, is that it needs a lot of work.

lol, no I'm just looking for opinions on how much work it'll take to get it loooking nice again and if anyone catches anything unusual. It definitly needs work, it's just a matter of how much.

Did it leak anti-freeze when the "head gasket" blew? Joking aside; what blew and how did he know? Loss of compression or an oil leak somewhere or an unusual sound. A broken cylinder/head stud comes to mind but these years usually didn't break studs. Looks like a fun project except for cleaning out the fuel system. Cheers, Jim

hehe ya.. all that water's probably rusted the cylinders by now :D

Evidently what happened was a sever loss of power but I'm not sure. He just told me it's got a blown cylinder head gasket and that it needs to be replaced.

hehe ya the fuel systems gonna be interesting to say the least.

Tim, pull up the carpeting in the front trunk area and see how bad the front suspension pan and battery boxes are rusted. I pic of that could be very helpful.

and get that Fram oil filter off asap...order some Mahle filters from out host. Also, isn't that a later model tach?

I do have to ask what's wrong with the fram filter? btw the cars in non-running condition right now

I don't know if that's a late model Tach or not.. I'll ask about it though. That's why I posted the pics.. for you guys to pick up those things.

There is a head gasket between each cylinder and it's individual head but between the heads and the cam tower there is only a sealant, no gasket per se. The loss of power may not be a blown gasket (coupled with a broken stud?) but something wrong in the valve train. I would not attempt to turn this engine over (not even by hand) until you pull off the valve covers and look at the cams and rockers and valve stem ends. Did the "blown head gasket" occur with a missed shift or other over- reving incident? Also, when the valve covers are off one can look for loose or broken studs. Cheers, Jim

I really don't know.. he never elaborated on it, but we're planning on a full rebuild before it goes back on the road.
