Tip Failure
1990 Tip with over 200K miles. (daily driver)
Last week took a drive up the coast and when I got back I blew the cooling fan belt. Finally got it back home and not having time to do it myself I brought it to the local dealer, only because they were close. The next day my trans started shifting hard. So I took it to a shop to lift it to check the fluid level and it was good. By the end of the day it wont move in forward gears only in reverse. Any Ideas whats wrong or will I end up looking for a replacement? By the way the TIP warning light is on now! Any comments appreciated. dj |
Did the hard shifting start before or after the local dealer work was done?
What are you looking to replace - the trans? What is TIP? (I have an 87 and I don't have that - thanks.) |
Tip= tiptronic automatic transmission
|
I only know American trans, but the fact you have reverse indicates your pump still works.
Must be something in the valve body, the part that directs fluid to the individual gears. Not sure how much direction comes from electronics. |
The hard shifting started after the visit to the stealership. I thought they let out some fluid from the trans. They had a free check up and thought I could also get another opinion in needing a Major tune up along with changing the fan belt.
The mechanic guy was a nut, he proceeded to dress me down because my rear tires were worn and that my Cab top was not working automatic anymore. Commented that I was not taking care of my 964 properly because it was leaking some oil. I said that why I was there and to see if they thought it was worth investing a coupe of thousand in servicing it an keeping it. I told him to just change the Fan belt and I would go elsewhere. This why I thought he may have sabotaged my car. |
I disconnected the battery to reset the ECU and now the Tip light is not lit up and the selector goes into the shifting mode but still won't move in any forward gears. I guess the trans just gave up. Anybody with any other Ideas?

There may be electronics directing the valvebody. Hopefully something simple.

Just the Tip?

I hope it is something simple also. I was looking into getting a major service before this happened. Just started checking around and rebuild of my trans would not be cheap.

Yea, ok. So, its really not very common to see these fail, but like all things mechanical--thy do eventually expire.
I would find a good independent shop (I am sure you can find recommendations here) and see if they can diagnose the problem better. Are you getting a large exclamation of the dash and the tip warning light? You might consider a trans flush and see it that helps. The fluid, like the transmission does not last forever. There are several relays and position sensors that also need to be looked at also. You really want to get a DME readout on this to see what is going on before you just rebuild it---which I would just find a used unit to swap in if it were me.
