79 911sc finally arrived in Berlin - thanks guys!

I'm reporting back on my little car buying odyssee.

I think I joined this forum in Oct. last year when I started searching in earnest. Thanks to lots of people's old posts and some more people, who helped me figure out what was what, which cars to stay/run away from, and which to consider, I ended up buying one in February. Just couldn't have done it otherwise.

I received the most help from Mike Broccolo of Autosportcanada and Christian of Copenhagen.
But there were many others, like Norman Gile, or the mechanic in Ormond Beach, Fl. who I rang about a PPI, who immediately answered, "if it's the red so and so I can give you a free PPI right here on the spot. The car's a piece of junk", when he very easily could have sold me that same information for a few hundred bucks!
Plus there was lots of humor in the many many forum posts I read!

Repatriating the car to Germany wasn't very costly but took quite a bit longer than anticipated. Nevermind, it's here now, passed inspections, registered as a historical vehicle, drives well, and I thought a few fotos were in order. I took these on the top floor garage of a local mall in front of these rather grim looking 70ies housing estates (note one Balcony is all dressed up for the soccer world cup final tomorrow).

Best
Daniel

Very nice.
Where did you end up finding the car?
And what year was she born?

Duniel3000,

It's interesting that you imported a 911 from the US, is the 911 SC market in Germany not very good, or are the car so expensive there already??

Great looking '79SC in Berlin where I was born. Just out of curiosity how did you ship your car from the US and how much was it.

Greetings from another '79SC owner.

Nice and clean Car Daniel and wonderful colour and views.

I am writing from Buenos Aires, Argentina. So, good luck for tomorrow's match! I hope we win but in case we do not, you will have a very deserved title.

Fernando.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

@poorsha
It's a 79 model I found in Colorado. Some broker had apparently seen it advertised in a local paper had re-listed it on craigslist. There was a lot of difficulty surrounding that buy, one of them the dealer suddenly demanding $4K more than the previously agreed price. For details look for the thread: "Mechanic designated for PPI snatching deal from broker".

Incidentally the same dealer who omitted to send me all the service records (have done so since) and who LOST the second key (the owner gave them two). And just this morning the one threadbare key I have suddenly quit turning the ignition. I'm stuck.
I received two blanks I had ordered yesterday, from which I hope a functioning ignition key can be cut.

@RSBob
It's bit of a drive to get on the Autobahn from here, and then some miles until there's no longer a speed limit. The one time I've been, going a bit over 100mph, one headlight seal and the velvet front seal of the sunroof started flapping in the breeze...

@HRHski
Yes, on the surface it's counterintuitive, to be importing a German car from the USA. But it is said, that >50% of the production went to North America in those times (remember, there were no near east or far east markets and no Russia to send them to). You tended to run them in drier climes as second or third cars spending most of their time in garages, plus they were/are being sold considerably cheaper in the US than here.

@Sabeo.m
Be sure to drop by for a beer next time you're here. I'll teach you some words.

@porwolf
All charges from Colorado to Berlin via Rotterdam incl. import duty (only 6% for cars >30y old) amounted to 3000€/ USD4K. I used a company called German Motors. It only took like two months longer than anticipated. The shipping company and the dealer were blaming each other for the delay. Should have gone thru LA rather than Houston too. But the shipping company had given their time estimate on the basis of Houston.

@Fperotti
Thanks for your nice words. We'll be united in hopefully watching a spectacular match with lots of goals tonight! :-)
