Interesting ID tag uncovered on '89 Carrera gas tank
Decided to strip and refinish the gas tank on my '89. During the process I uncovered this ID tag glued to the tank, beneath the rubberized coating, next to the spare tire mount.
![]() ![]() If you look at the tank now knowing it was there, you can see where it was located (highlighted in the box). ![]() I assume this is either some sort of serial number placed by the manufacturer or manufacturer part number. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has seen this before? I have seen posts on a lot of tank restorations with no mention of it but these are mostly earlier cars so maybe it is just a quirk of the later 3.2 cars. Todd

That is very interesting. I will wait until a few others find similar tags before speculating though.

FYI I have had two tanks pass through my hands recently, an '82 and an '86, and neither had such a tag.

A local radiator shop used tags similar to that to identify something they had repaired, no tag no warranty..

I can assure you this car is all original. It has only 80k KM (~50k miles) and it was quite obvious that it had never previously been removed from the car let alone repaired or refinished.
This may be an '89 only issue as the last run of 3.2 Carreras have a lot of interesting differences. For instance, no production number stamped on the dash below the knee guards, unique front left fenders with 964-like separate plastic fuel filler cups but no cutout in the lower dog leg for 964 rocker panel mounting, new stampings for the inner metal door panels (interestingly enough these doors have ID stampings as well that match the left and right door to one another similar to what was done on the early SWB cars) etc. Todd

Found another example here in the for sale forum. Here is a tank advertised as being pulled from an '87 that you can clearly see has the same ID label under the schutz.
