Smog testing an earlier 911 in Calif??
 

Did 1977 911 Porsches come with cats and smog equipment of any kind? Will a stock 2.7 ROW pass California emissions? How can this be determined?
Any experiences out there to share?

A USA 77 would have an EGR system from the airbox to the muffler and had thermal reactors for the exhaust system along with a 5 blade fan. I think a 76 Cali had these items too.
Everything to kill the case.

As I recall, our '77 was equipped with the deadly thermal reactors & a wonderful smog pump.

Don't know about the ROW.

1977 USA 911S came with the following smog equipment

EGR valve, filter cannister, plumbing from a small muffler connector to the valve

Thermal reactors from the heads to the heater boxes

air pump, with backfire valve, distribution tube manifold which connected to the individual cylinder head air injector valves.

Timing and fuel mix were specific for usa and cali emissions.

Fast forward to today. MOST inspectors will not know what the thermal reactors look like (round cannisters that bolted to the heads) and a LOT of 75-77 911 owners took these off and threw them in the trash. But they do know what the EGR and air pump systems do look like, so you will need those to pass visual inspection. They will also check the gas filler neck for the unleaded nozzle size (which is a waste of time since every Cali gas station i know of no longer have the larger nozzles). They will check the cap for vacuum integrity as loose vapors are part of the no no here,
If the motor is running well, it should be adjusted to the Cali specs, then taken to a smog station while good and hot.

FWIW- ROW did have a smog pump standard! Saw it on the showroom floor in France in 1976
