I just went through the process of rebuilding the front bumper assembly and I literally had to have the bumper hanging while I connected the parking/directional lights on the bumper and then attach the guard plate. The guard plate blocks access to 3 of the 4 screw threads on the bumper lights on the passenger side. As noted earlier it looks like it adds additional protection for the oil cooler trombone and the two horns. I decided to put it back in because in 1999 I had an accident where the passenger front bumper kissed the rear end of a BMW. The BMW cut into my lane and then braked hard due to a light change coming around a bend in a road. I no longer had a safe distance in my lane and I braked hard to stop. My nose dipped as his rear end rose, Naturally, my passenger fender and light was crumpled by his rear drivers side bumper. I believe the plate helped minimize the damage on that side.
