Help decode this engine number
 

A friend is looking at buying a car that comes with this engine number, 909615
Could someone please shed some light on what it is.

Is that engine from a 1967 911 Coupe?

according to Peter Morgan Original Porsche 911, that number does not exist.
type 901/05 numbers ranged in 67 from 907001 to 909000 Coupe
901/06 from 911001 to 911190 coupe from 11/66
901/05 from 911191 to 912050 targa
901/02 960001 to 961178 couple S and targa S

Might want to give us the other number, located near the serial number. (XXX/XX)

The 907001 - 909000 were the standard 911 engines manufactured in 66 for 66 model chassis

67 standard model 911 with engines mfg'd in late 66 were 909001 - 911000 and should be designated 901/05. It's a 2.0. 130hp @ 6100 and compression should be 9.0:1.

67 standard engines in 66 were also extended to 911001 - 911190 re designated 901/06 but exact same as above. No changes else wise

67 911S engines mfg'd in 66 were 960001 - 961140 , were 160hp at 6600, 9.8:1 and were designated 901/02

The 67 901/06 continued mfg into 67 with 911191 - 912050 until the 68 engines began with the new numbering system

The 67S. 901/02 continued mfg into 67 with 961141 - 962178

You have a standard (non S ) engine Manufactured in 66 for a 67 model chassis built in 66

What is the chassis number of the car?

Thanks for all the replies. The car is 912 that's why I didn't mention it. It's a big project and is without it's orig engine. the 911 engine that comes with it will go into it if he buy's it as he wan'ts a hot rod 912-911

If the chassis is a 67 912 it's easy to convert. That year 912 had the front swaybar where later years they were put In Only the 911S. So it's a head start. But keep in mind it's a 13mm instead of 15 like the S. Your transaxle mounts are different but could do as is and of course cut out the oil tank (it should be stamped already) and cut the motor mounts and weld in 911 type. Another good thing is the wiring harness has both 911 and 912 in it.

engine type 901/05, the 1967 normal engine. Build # in the 61xx range; post the number if you find it please.
