'78SC - Difference in brake parts?

I am going to replace the brake pads on my '78SC.
Dempsey's book shows small wire pin retainers that hold in the 4 pins.
The Bentley service manual says to drift out the retaining pins, with no mention of retainers.

I found a reference to my question.
Front calipers have no pin retainers, while the rear calipers do.
