Help on my first two issues....
Good morning all,
I recently purchased my 86 Carrera coupe and over the last few weeks of very enjoyable driving I have noticed a couple things that I would like to solve or at least get a plan of attack for. #1 - Minor: My Hi/Low beam handle will turn on the high beams with an ever-so-slight move. I mean, you can breathe on it and it will turn the high beams. It doesn't lock into place and all it takes is a slight pull back to home and they turn off. It bugs me because if I am behind someone in the morning/night when the headlights are on I seems as though I am flashing my brights at people. Do I need to replace the switch/handle? Is this a sign that I may need to install the relay kit to get the headlights off of the "through the switch" route as from factory? #2 - Major (possibly) When cold, the engine has definite hesitation or "misses" between 2000 and 3300 RPM. When up to temp this is much less noticeable and decreases in band moving to more 2800-3200 RPM. Is this a sign of lost compression due to the rings and valve train being cold so that when they expand with temperature increase it gets less severe and thus less noticeable? I do have some oil smoke at start up but its gone within a minute or so. The engine pulls strong once warm if I am at 1/2 throttle - full throttle. The hesitation or miss is really only there if I am just cruising and not really getting on the gas. I had a PPI done by a reputable Porsche shop to which they didn't note anything but the car was up to temp by the time it reached their shop so perhaps the tech didn't notice anything during his test drive. Any help/advice would be appreciated. |
I assume you have posted pictures of your car on a previous post. There is sort of a friendly "rule" on this. No pictures, no help. Anyway.
You might mention other info. e.g.: what work has been done and recently done on the car, miles/etc. There are others here that know very much better than I. My thoughts are: CHT sensor, plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor. |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...psc9032462.jpg The car just rolled over 161k miles this morning on the way to work. The original owner kept a very well documented list of service records all of which I have, but there is a blank spot during the second owners time with the car. I purchased the car from the third owner and long time Pelican Bob Danielson and aside from changing the oil I don't think he really touched it. That being said I don't have any records in recent history of any service work done to the ignition system so a refresh could very well be needed there, that's not a problem. The "CHT sensor" is that the crankshaft sensor? |
It does sound like your switch may be getting tired and replacement may be called for. The relays wouldn't help with the feel of the switch, but will lessen the load on the new one ( though 30 years isn't a bad lifespan for the original one).
The misfiring could be a variety of things, and the usual tune-up items should be initially checked. I'd also wonder if the flapper (barn door) in the induction air path is getting old and tired. There are threads on disassembling the flapper box and repositioning the sliding arm to position it to a unworn section of the contact. We had to do that on my 84 with 135,000 miles on the odometer. Finally, CHT refers to the cylinder head temperature sensor. Please share what you find out with the group. Nice looking car, BTW! |
High beam problem as described is a common occurrence and can be repaired easily. Do a advanced search on forum there is a solution where you need to readjust the copper fingers with a small screwdriver. These have become bent over the years. Takes about a hour to completely remove and do adjustment

I did describe the repair on my 79SC turn signal switch in this thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/699357-headlight-hi-low-beam-issue-newbie.html It was not difficult and fixed the same problem good. The steering wheel has to come off though. That is not too difficult but has to be done carefully. I got myself a cheap Harbor Freight electrical impact wrench for it. You may want to check the play of the steering wheel shaft while you are at it. The plastic bearing sleeve holding it in place tends top disintegrate with age. A special new design is available from Pelican. I did that too and my steering wheel shaft is as tight as new. here are a couple more threads on the common turn signal switch problem: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/669809-high-beams-staying-low-beams.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/248149-turn-signal-switch-quick-fix-pictures.html |
Minor issue fixed by bending the hi beam bar away from the low beam bar. Works perfect now. Did it while installing my vintage wood Momo!
