1980 Flasher relay - multiple questions - long
 

My flashers were acting up. I checked the flasher relay and found it a) flopping around (not mounted to anything) and b) its plastic cover was loose and held together with electrical tape.
I repaired the loose cover and now the flashers work as expected (both directional and emergency).
Questions:
- is this a correct and/or original part (pix to follow)?

- how/where is the flasher mounted to car? Or is the socket mounted to the car? If so, how/where?
- another question and maybe not related - when car is off and I put directional signal on, lights on both sides of car come on (euro parking lights). This happens with both left and right directional signal. Could this be related to relay? Something else? Or is this just the right behavior?

in my 1973 it is just flopping around behind the left hand gauge.

It is square and has 4 connectors......I just ordered and electronic adjustable one because I want to put brighter LED directional bulbs in the car.

Yes, when the car is off and you put the signal lever down, the parking lights come on on that side of the car. This is a DIN requirement- when you park on a narrow road in Germany, you don't want people to hit your car, so you light up that side.

3040650 - I understand that pull lever down; left lights on - push lever up; right lights on - is how things are supposed to work.

My car is - pull lever down; left AND right lights on - push lever up; left AND right lights on.

The parking light circuit is separate from the turn signal circuit even though the turn signal switch provides the switch circuit for the parking lights. The below schematic shows the paring light circuit within the two red lines. You will need t locate the three connections 58L 58R and P on the turn signal stalk.I also have the same flasher relay in my car.

Thanks targa80. So, if I understand you correctly, my issue with euro parking light is not related to flasher but (possibly) related to directional stalk.

Yes, the flasher circuit is tied to the hazard switch, Flasher relay and the turn signal indicator switch.

The parking light circuit is tied to the light switch and the parking light switch contacts that are attached to but separate from the turn signal indicator switch. The turn signal stalk controls both flasher/parking switch contacts at the same time. The parking lights are only controlled by the turn signal switch when the light switch is off and the ignition switch is in the off position. If the ignition switch is turned on it disables power to the parking light contact switch. If the light switch is turned on power is supplied to both sides of the parking lights.

Open question is how/where is flasher mounted to car?

I recently put all of the separate harnesses back into my 80SC. The flasher relay socket is round and is designed to be installed into a hole on a panel like the relays located on the fuse panel. When I was done installing all of the pass through connectors in the luggage compartment behind the cockpit gauges the Flasher relay had no hole to go into so it is a floater behind the gauges. I am pretty sure that my reinstallation is correct since I numbered each connector and corresponding pass through hole.

If anyone has a different take on this issue I would like to hear it and see a picture of the flasher relay location in the SC series.

I have looked at other threads related to the 4 pin flasher and they showed it floating in the same area. There was one that had a mounted square plug but I believe that was for an older version 911.
