Hi as Im putting a roof on my 77 ive sourced a 74 roof clip and am now looking to buy some quarter window glass,
My understanding is that there was non change from 1974 until 1989 as far as roof dimension goes, Is this correct? Or does it go further back in time or further forward to later models? eg: can a quarter window say from a 1984 Carrera fit a 1974 roof clip?? If not what are the differences are they slight ? And what about the ones that have latches on them? ive seen them in earlier cars but none in later cars?

The pop-out windows can work up to 89. The OE fixed window models have an extra steel U-channel along the B-pillar that the OE pop-out cars did not.
Some where around here I posted a thread all about it.

UP to 89 agreed, but what year does it go back to, 1970? 1969 earlier I wonder, Ive found a set of quarter windows on ebay , the seller says they fit from 1978 to 1989, seems a bit strange that one, I don't see any changes through the seventies

They must be fixed windows, which became standard on the SC. Before that, fixed windows were standard on the 912E.

Fixed windows and operable windows share no common parts. You are more likely to see operable windows on a pre-'78 car but fixed windows were used on some models. After 1977, operable windows were not available.
Operable windows have more parts needed. You have a couple different finishes for the trim, bright and black. You have a couple different options for the glass, clear and tinted. Forget which models a particular style came in as standard, just figure anything from the '70's or '80's will fit. The B pillar on your car (whether from the old roof or new roof - I don't know where you are making the cut) will be configured for either fixed glass or moveable glass. That aspect can be changed by removing some pieces (if it is set up for operable glass) and welding on a flange for fixed glass. Going the other way (fixed to operable) is harder. It's easier to find the fixed glass. I have some if you want to go that direction. JR |

I converted my '79 SC to use pop-out windows. I found out the hard way that the windows from a SWB car ('64-'68) is just a little smaller in each direction. So they fit, but they leak, bad. So if you are going to run pop-outs, make sure they are from a 1969 - 1977.

Fixed rear quarter window? - is where I showed the subtle differences.
Someone more recently, outlined the differences too (search) Going to the fixed will likely be the easiest.
