thermal reactors on a 77 911, what is inside those canistors? can they be gutted and stay on the car and become harmless??

Hello Russ, Yes you can gut thermal reactors.. but the advantages are minimal.. your better off replacing them..
with headers or back dated exhaust or even better SSI's. If you decide to "gut them" there is two ways to do it.. 1. saw off the ends and cut the insides out with a plasma cutter and then re-weld the end caps back on. 2. put them on a Mill and run the maximum size hole saw through the exhaust port flanges. modifying thermal reactors will only decrease temps down a few degrees besides they are really flow restrictive. removing them altogether is the best way to go. Jorge (Targa Dude) ![]() PS.. I hope this helped. |

Russ,
Targa Dude is right in suggesting you get rid of them. My mechanic replaced the '77 exhaust system with an SC system without Catlyst Converters, so called Euro system. Also he removed the air injection system. Evidently Porsche was scrambling to get in compliance with then new US emission rules and cobbeled together injectors plus thermal reactors. However you will need to keep them or something if you are subject to emissions testing. Frank |

You can pick up by pass pipes that replace the thermols, they were on mine but I took them off when I put SSI's on, whick I highly reccemend.

If you have any chance, ditch the thermal reactors. They do nothing but fry the motor. It was a "make do" by Porsche to get the motor to pass the emissions. If you have an "inspection" to get past its understandable. If you are going to gut the reactors to increase performance, I believe you will find it a waste of time.
Early heat exchangers will do more for you. The earlier exchangers are easier to install than the SSI ones, but it is a minor inconvenience. I have had both and from the seat of my pants I can't tell any difference between the performance of the SSI's over the early exchangers. The factory replacement early exchangers are stainless too! Russ,
I see that Pelican Parts sells them for 249.95. I still have my set that I will not be needing anymore. I'll sell them to you if you're interested. Let me know.

the original shells over the reactors are lined with ASBESTOS, so keep the pounding to a minimum to avoid kicking up dust. same with 912Es. same with 356 mufflers, same with early vw bug heat hoses off the exchangers. crikey!

What is the best way to go? I have a California Car, so I need to pass Smog evey year. If I replace them with headers, do I have to take them off and put the thermal reactors back on each time? What a pain. How does everyone else in CA do it?

in north carolina they don't test emissions after 25yrs. i don't know about visual but i doubt if they would know what they were looking at anyway.

Hey Russ,
Dude this is your post... so what exactly are you trying to achieve? if you don't have smog requirements in your state what is it you are looking for? I'm sorry.. now I'm little confused... Jorge (Targa Dude) ![]() |

yea targa dude you are confused.
the thermal reactors are cooking my heads and will eventually destroy the motor. i need to get the thermal reactors out of the system and replace them with what ever makes sense $wise and gets rid of the heat. russ |

Well, you have received some pretty good replies from some pretty knowledgable folks on this board. looks like you have some decisions to make..and depending how many miles your motor already has on it.. it could be more than cooked... like maybe well done.
