Broken down
I am stick on the road waiting for a tow.... Any tips on have the car towed? I need a flatbed, right? Does the car have tow hooks? I don't see anything. '87 Carrera.
Also - alternator light lit, fan belt is fine. Massive grinding noise, smoke coming from alternator. Probably a toasted alternator... Right? I need one in a hurry. Standard Bosch one is ok? Thanks -Glenn |
Your 87 Carrera should have 2 tow hooks in front at the front of the torsion bars. Yes, flatbed.

Flat bed all the way. My '87 has tow hooks. Cheer up! Alternators are cheap compared to replacement engines.... you are getting off easy.
Bummer on a Friday afternoon though... |
Thanks folks. Flatbed on the way, as well as an alternator from our host. I remember the tow hooks now!
Thanks -Glenn |
No hooks in the rear. We used straps through the wheels on the rear.

I generally just use a regular tow truck with the dollies for the rear wheels. No messing with tow hooks, worrying about scraping the spoiler on the steep approach angle of the flatbed, or waiting around for the one flatbed in the area.

Here in San Diego, most of the tow trucks are flatbeds. Even so, I request a flat bed. The driver should have a few 4X4s and know how to use them to prevent scraping going up and down the ramp.

Had some trouble towing... rough night. Basically, the tow hooks on my car were covered by plates, which seemed to be there to protect the A/C condenser from bottoming on speed bumps etc. The problem is, they were bolted on, and I had a lot of trouble removing them on the side of the road. Eventually got them off and was towed without event.
The car is in the garage, awaiting the new alternator. Thanks folks -Glenn |
How did you get bolts off without your tool set?
Did you have a pair of pliers or something? |
