1979 930 turbo with msd install problems
Hi guys, here's the problem, ther permatune went bad in the 1979 930 and I was in here last week and decided to go with the msd ignition and after heavy research on here I found detailed install instructions and followed them to the T, the problem is there is spark at the coil but I did msd's trouble shooting and was able to get spark out of the coil by grounding the white trigger wire and grounding the distributor coil wire and I know the distributor runs on magnetic pickup and I tried the trouble shooting procedure for that and didn't get spark when I jumped the purple wire and the green wire comming out of the msd unit while grounding the distributor coil wire at the same time at this time I am confused and would appreciate any help and advice.

First how many pins did your CDI have, 6 or 8? cos that makes a difference to how you set up the msd, of which will become known to you in the very near future , after you disclose us that important piece of information:)

"the problem is there is spark at the coil " ????
i assume there is spark out of the coil but not out of the dist or plugs.? here is the deal with MSD's in 930's. (short version...i hope) the signal the bosch uses to fire is positive to neg. the MSD needs neg to positive. if you dont swap the wires, the timing is so far advanced that the engine may not run. (IE, spark out of coil but not dist). here is how i did mine. i left the original connector and wiring alone. i bought a connector that plugs into the stock connector. i wired the new connector for the proper signal. now the MSD will work properly and if the MSD dies i have a spare bosch that i can just plug in and go. here is what needs to be done. swap the violet and the green wires from the MSD. the violet should go to the braid from the dist. |
It's a 6 pin connector

You say the braid on the green distributor wire correct cause what I did was I peeled back some of the green wire and connected the purple wire to that and the green wire directly to the inside wire under the that and still nothing. Keep in mind and I'm not sure if this matters but it does have stock ignition wires and I'm not sore if that makes a difference.it has a brand new msd 6al and blaster 2 coil
