oil level switch vs sending unit
 

I have a 911T targa which has gauges without markings for the oil level and pressure. It only has 2 big red lights in the area where the marked gauges normally are. The oil level gauge warning light has started to come on and now will not go off even when the dipstick shows oil level is in in the normal range. My oil tank also has no sending unit in it. My question is where is the switch that tells this light to come on. It is getting 12 volts from somewhere. I pulled off the wires from the oil temp and pressure sending units and the light remains on.

The light is probably for your alternator/charging system, maybe the e-brake. Porsche never used an "oil level" warning light in the early cars.

this warning light is in the far left gauge which shares the fuel gauge. The Oil pressure warning light is in the second gauge from the left. I think the generator light is in the center gauge at the bottom. I had never seen this set up before either but it seemed to work fine for the few years I have had this car up until now.

I can't remember the position of the e-brake lamp in your car. Look at the back of the instruments, from inside the front trunk compartment, find the offending light and note the wire colors. Go inside the car and locate the wires for the handbrake. The harness should enter under the handbrake handle base plate at the rear center of the plate, under the carpet on the tunnel. Check the wire colors, you might have to loosen and lift the plate to see them, and see if they match those at the gauge.

OK I will look at them when I get home. Here is a picture of the offending gauge. It seems the 1968 912 had similar gauges and I think this is a picture of the switch in the 912 (I know this is a different engine) for this oil level gauge.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1408023438.jpg

So no one has ever seen this set up of gauges and knows where the sending switch is.:confused:
The controlling wire is solid black and seems to have no other color
I guess I can just disconnect the wire and monitor the level via dip stick if I have to.
