993 gas tank in an older 911?

In my quandary concerning my as tank replacement, I noticed that the later 911's had a gas tank that was reconfigured to give deeper space at the nose of the car.
Has anyone had experience putting a 993 tank into an earlier 911?
I'm thinking it might be too much modification, however... ??
