I got my MFI tuned this week. Its a completely new car!!!!!

YEAH!!!! I finallygot sick of the poor working MFI on my 1970 911S that I bought last month. I broke down and took it to a shop for service. That MFI system is more than I want to take on in the first couple months of Porsche ownership. Now keep in mind that this is the first time in my 32 years that I have ever allowed a shop to work on one of my cars. (other than the muffler shop) I took the car to Stuttgart Automotive here in Centerville Ohio and let Ray work on it. Ray is the owner and a factory trained Porsche mechanic. He went to shoool in the late 60s and worked at a dealer for 10 years before starting Stuttgart in 1978. He built the engines for a very successful Camel light class car in the 1980s winning at both Daytona and Sebring if I remember correctly........anyway, I digress. Turns out that the car had loose cyl heads, the injector pump was out of time, the ignition timing was 14 degrees retarded and a few other little problems. Fixed a leaky cam seal while we were in there and adjusted the valves. I dropped quite a chunk of money to have it repaired, but I cant express how happy I am with the car. :D It runs PERFECT. The cold start works, allowing me to pull up on the hand throttle and it will start up without touching the accelerator. The car idels at 900RPM all the time now instead of hunting around like it used to. And the power.........omagod.......so much low end torque that wasnt there before. And then, when the tach hits 5000 RPM the engine accelerates to 7200 so quick that if you arent paying attention it will hit the rev limiter before you can react. So, anyway, I am absolutly stoked!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif The funnyest thing was that when I picked the car up today, Ray had to show me the warning ticket that one of Centervilles finest bestowed on him on the final road test. Hehe, first time he has been pulled over in years. Finally, all I have to say is "Eric McKenna......that SC of yours doesnt stand a chance anymore! Anytime, anywhere baby....its on!!! http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/2ar15.gif

You know, I've heard that same thing about early MFI cars. You know, the part about "omagod."

I'm still trying to get my 72 911T running right, it's been sitting for 2-3 years and I've used Berryman's B-12 chem-tool to free up the injector pump. Now I'm not getting any spark so I've got a Permatune CD box and new coil headed my way from Pelican... I know my 'T' won't pull like your 'S', but I can't wait!!
I wonder who is good with MFI in the Seattle area... hmmm
Glad to hear yours runs so sweet!!!:D

Jeff, we were only just on the low side of 1K by the time he had finished. But it was entirely worth it. And it was only about $70 in parts.......the rest was labor hours. (and I think he gaveme a little break on that too) However, he did a lot more than just set the MFI. When we found that the heads needed torqued, that ate up a lot of time. Seems that the previous builder had assembled the head nuts dry and they had lightly rusted to the studs. So Ray had to go VERY slowly and carefully so that he didnt thread the studs out of the case when taking the nuts off. Several of them requiered penetrating oil and a small amount of heat to get them to come loose. A lesser or less honest mechanic would have just pulled the studs out and said "oh well, gotta pull the engine now". I would recommend asking around to find the mechanic that was actually around back in the MFI era. I dont trust the younger guys that have "book smarts" but very little actual working experience. Plus the old guys are more likly to have the cool Bosch exhaust analyzer that can be put in the car during road tests. As long as the work is contained to only the MFI and there are no major parts required, you should be able to get away with $500 to get it tuned up. DaveC

Glad to hear of your success! An MFI S is astonishingly quick when running correctly - suprises me every time I drive the car.

Dave
Thanks, when I wrote the post I was wondering whether it was closer to 2K.
I think you got a decent price 'cos he did a lot of work.
I'm doing mne at present, I'ts almost done, I'll probably post the story, warts and all, in a day or so.

Jeff, I will be interested in hearing how yours turns out. I guess the point of my original post was to not be satisfied with poor manners from your MFI. I still need to have my throttle bodies re-bush'd but even with the air leaks the car still runs supurbly. Oh, and Randy, I just realized that you own the "T" that Iread about in Excellence a couple years ago. I was sitting in airport in San Diego waiting on a flight home and showed my wife those photos. "Thats what I want" was what I told her :D Of course mine isnt quite teh budget buster that yours was but it was none the less inspirational. SmileWavy

Oh, ho! It was not sacrasm. It was only facetiousness. I truly respect MFI cars. Truly. I want to ride in one some day, and I know I will. Some day. Congratulations. As fun as my car is to drive (pretty darned fun, really), I think it is probably a big yawn compared to an MFI-S.

Warren won't even banter with me about performance comparisons of our cars. He's not being a poophead either....he just knows the answer to that question.

Happy motoring.
