Double Clutch and Heel & Toe
I just got back from a chowder run down to the PCH. I run a 915/72 euro box with the factory cooler. I double clutch upshifts with the light weight clutch and heel & toe the downshifts. 915 is a racing trans by design and it makes you feel alive to drive it right. Shift on with your 915!!!!!!

I hate my 915. But I've driven enough good 915s to know its my trans, not the 915 in general. But when they're bad, they can really diminish the enjoyment of driving our 911s. Especially around town. I can't wait until I can afford a rebuild.

Tippy,
My wiper arms on my '85 Carrera are configured just like yours. |

I just had my 915 rebuilt (235k miles), & Guards LSD and Sachs clutch installed by Autometrics in Charleston, SC. It took a while and cost more than I paid for my first 3 cars combined, but it shifts great now. I already had a WEVO shifter. Can't wait to get it to the track in 2 weeks.

The 915 is a light weight transmission, and according to my Porsche tech, it gets you to 60MPH faster than the G50. The G50 is known to have an issue with snapping the lugs that mount the clutch fork. It is also a major league PITA to remove, compared to the 915. We have one in or group that makes a death rattle if you push the clutch pedal too far to the floor when shifting.
The G50 was developed to offer the more effeminate of the Porsche drivers an easier alternative for shifting, LOL. I think in all seriousness, both the 915 and the G50 have their pluses and minuses. |

You must be a really smart guy, Tippy. How did you know to thread in a bolt in order to pull out the Clutch fork shaft? It just seems so counter-intuitive.
Color me impressed by your abilities. Quote:

This weekend I drove my 83 SC with a rebuilt 915 and a mate's recently acquired 84 3.2 with a recently rebuilt 915. I still can't believe the 915 gets a bad rep, even when not compared to the G50. The 3.2s box has had time to settle and was absolutely superb. Yet no-one complains about the 2.4S box, the 2.7RS box, the 3.0RS box etc etc. In the 964 the G50 fits. The only reason I can think of is that the journos who perpetuate this bollocks have never driven a sorted 915! The same people who have in recent years been 'amazed' at just how good the SC really is....because for the first time they have actually driven one! |
