Engine wont turn over, help
I just put my engine back in after fuel injection work and fixing a little things while it was out...now ive put everything back together (so i hope) and i turned the key and the engine turned over for about 3 seconds slowly and then stopped...now it doesnt turn...no noises ..no clicking, nothing...anyone have any suggestions??
Oh,,the battery is good.. Damian |
You don't give a lot of detail. Sounds like you might have a poor battery connection (pos. or neg.). Have you tried barring it over by hand (to at least eliminate that... i.e. a seized engine)? How do you know the battery is up to snuff?

Yea sorry bout that...Ive got a 911sc 1983...What u mean by barring it over? U mean putting a wrench on the lower pulley and turning it, no hadn't done that yet, and the battery I took out and put it in another car and it quickly turned it over, and its new.
Only thing I was thinking was I had the starter hooked up wrong, but if I remember correctly I only removed on large black wire, I believe it was the positive. |
I hope you have a charger for your battery... e.g. you keep cranking engines, but not recharging... You need to keep your batteries topped off. Get a Battery Tender; they are worth their weight in gold.
If that battery is cranking some other car (and you should put it on a charger after all this work), that does not eliminate a bad connection on your car. Make sure they are tight (and clean). All of them. Barring the engine = eliminate the BIG deals. I don't know who/how this rebuild was done. I've seen doozies. Bar the engine with a spanner. If it even budges, you are good. I use the generator (alternator nut) on my 912 to turn the engine. I assume the same can be done on the 911 (but I have not tried it yet). That nut, for what it is worth, is easy to get to. Your belt must be at proper adjustment, of course. Michael |
I was going to say im eliminating the battery as the problem but I never say never im gonna put it on my trickle over night...Im just banging my head on what I could of done wrong....

A good battery won't fix a bad connection. Engine drops are known to cause problems like these.

I had a similar thing. Turned out to be a faulty ignition switch.

Check that you properly connected the large engine ground strap to the transmission to engine mounting bolt.
I only mention this as your first post indicates you only remember connecting the battery positive to the starter. |
1. Try turning the engine over by hand first, if yes, go to 2. if no, engine comes out.
2. Clean the battery connections at the battery. 3. Clean the ground connections at the battery chassis point, 4. Clean the ground connection at the chassis point next to the gear box firewall 5. Make sure you get 10V at the yellow wire (small wire) at the starter when ignition is switched to starting. If yes, ignition switch if fine, if no, ignition switch is bad 6. And if you get to this point, then your starter is bad. |
wholly crap....well just like we all do or just me...I thought I had the large ground strapp bolt down (Timmy) and the engine now is cranking like crazy...but it hasn't started..maybe the fuel is taking a few turns of the key or ill have to look at the coil and see if its firing w a help of my neighbor....wow I thought I was doooomed haaaa
thanks everyone...damian ill let u know what happens in a few |
Got to lift the airflow sensor to get fuel up to the injectors.

how many times should I depress it or for how long? thanks bruce

Excitement is building for me as I have the engine turning over nicely but I now have to solve why I have no fire outta the coil, then ill be that much closer to happiness...
Does anyone have a close up picture of the msd wires going into the original bosch plug or maybe just can inform me if I have mine hooked up wrong??, maybe its just another ground wire not right...THANKS again Damian |
Thanks she fired up had some wires wrong but not running consistently. ..shell fire up then the idle will rise then fall and then shut off..my next issue now...I just hop it isn't a air leak I can't get too....hymmm...DAMIAN

Can anyone advise I had originally dropped the engine to deal w a large enough air leak but while I was in there I suspect ed poss other smaller ones...maybe my air/furl mixture is way off cuz of this...or maybe not...does air cause the mixture rich or lean...can anyone advise plssss???
Thks DAMIAN |

The idle hunting you mention usually means a too rich mixture. This is often caused by a too low control pressure (WUR) or a mixture that is simply set too high.
Maybe your mixture had been set to high to help "correct" that vac leak you have now fixed? |
