Seat Slider Stop
The driver seat in my '74 does not slide quite far enough forward for my comfort. I find that it is hard to get the clutch fully depressed, and 5th can be a real stretch. I ain't no Wilt Chamberlain, but I'm not a midget either. I have no problem at all with my '87. Soooo, I took the seat out today to investigate. Turns out that Porsche has a steel stop riveted into the ratchet side of the slider. This stop hits the hex head bolt that attaches the seat to the inner rails. I don't understand the purpose of this stop. Without it, the seat can only go a few more clicks forward (which would more than solve my problem) anyway. Before I remove the stop, can anybody give me a reason why I shouldn't?
Michael

Mike, my seats and rails were attached with shallow headed Allen bolts, not hex head bolts. I have full seat travel fore and aft. Both seats have them, and the seats were original to the car, 77 Targa. Hex heads may be too thick for seat to rail clearance. Not much room there...

Can you move the seat far enough forward (without removing the forward mounting bolts first) to remove the rear bolts? If so, are you certain that the "stop" has not already been removed? If you didn't say, what year is your car? Michael

Mike,
Allen head is shallow, not very high, less than .125" hex. Yes, I can move my seat far enough forward to remove Allen head socket screws that attach seat slider to body mount. 77 Targa. If you can remove bolts diagonally, you can 'twist' the seat to get access to remaining bolts. Good luck! |

Bob, I think the "stop" on your seat must be removed. I wish I would have taken a few photos.... but there just isn't room for the slider to make it over the stop with the bolt in... unless it was a true counter sunk flat head; but we know that isn't the case. I took the plunge and drilled out the stop. The seat now has full travel fore and aft, and perfect access to front and rear bolts for easy and proper installation. I don't understand the reason for the stop.... if anybody knows please chime in.

Mike,
My seat has a stop, but travel not an issue. Looked at my rails and I did see Allen head bolts attaching seat to rail. Looked like shallow headed cap screws to me. Anyway, glad to hear you got it fixed.. |
