another stinky car question

I am trying to avoid purchasing a new fuel distributer and am hoping that there may be a more attractive (<$) solution to my problem. My car stinks. Took it to my mechanic, for whom I have great respect, and he hooked it up to the co2 meter. Car runs rich at first, as it should, and upon reaching temp runs lean. Mixture can be adjusted to desired setting. Problem is the mixture fluctuates.
When reved to 5000 rpms it flattens out like its not getting enough gas and car does not pull to redline. Injectors giving equal amounts when measured.

Thanks for any input.

Charley

Anyone? Basically, it will not hold the adjustment.
