Blank case question
 

So I have a car with a blank case engine, but it has a type stamp- in this case, 911/51, which according to my reading of the Red Book, is a 72 t case. The casting bus where the engine number should be looks completely clean- no grinding marks or anything- just casting surfaces. I have someone telling me that a blank case from the factory would never have an engine type stamp, that it would be completely blank. Really? How would anyone know what specs it was set up for? Can anyone clarify this for me?

Well, I have heard the same thing - if you got a replacement case it had no SNs.

You don't need the SN - the type number tells you all you need to know (plus I don't think there were any differences in the cases themselves - it was cranks and heads and rods and pistons and cylinders and intakes and maybe exhausts which created the different engine models).

Perhaps the same is true if you purchased a whole new motor? Again, the type number would let you know what the innards were.

When I worked for Carquip Tom had 2 NOS 2.0l mag case replacement cases. They came from Karl Thompson who got them from Vasek. They were both stamped 901/16 but no serial numbers.

I can confirm, my new case (930 Turbo) has no s/n and also no type number.

my case is stamped 930/06 (78-79 3.0), and the other marking is *3280888* which would be from like a 60s engine.
all i have are guesses as to why. theyre factory stamps, aluminum case, and under the "/" it appears to have a "9" that looks as if something was not ground all the way off or something before restamping with 930/06.
I have a feeling some of the things that went on, we may never understand ;)

If this is the case, then I suppose that these were leftovers. I do know of a 901/16 that did not get a build #, and is beyond the serial range a little. As to why they would stamp the type # on the case before building it, I do not know but it is interesting to consider.

Generally however, a replacement case has no serial or type # because it is an empty case, so it could be built up as anything. It would be interesting to know the "-xR" casting part #'s on the sides of the case since this gives a clue as to the production period.
