Need help choosing muffler
 

Hi

I have a 1972 911 with a 1977 Carrera 3.0 engine.
It has OBX headers (Porsche 911 RSR 3 0L OBX Stainless Steel Header Set | eBay)
and a custom muffler made by a porsche-racer on the Norwegian Porsche Club.

The car sounds great. It has a very racing car like sound. I just love accelerating, and driving through tunnels and revving the engine. :)

However, at cruising rpm's and at idle the exhaust generates too much noise for my liking. It is downright annoying both to my neighbours when the car is running outside my house, and to myself when cruising for long distances. I can't listen to music while driving unless I turn up the volume so much that it is damaging to my hearing.

So I think I am going to bite the bullet and replace my muffler for something a little less noisy.

Any recommendations for something with a high and agressive sound when accelerating, but not too noisy on idle and normal cruising? I would love to get the best of both worlds: Both the fantastic noise I have today when revving and accelerating, and acceptable noise levels when I'm not hammering the pedal.
It need to be a dual inlet dual outlet muffler compatible with my excisiting headers.

Here is an old youtube clip of my current setup. This is before switching from K-jetronic to EFI, so the sound was more muted then. Furthermore, the crappy old camera I used to capture the video didn't do a good job of recording the sound. So it is louder and more of a rumble at idle than what the video gives impression of. I didn't rev the engine much during that video because it wasn't completely warmed up. However, it's the only video footage I have so far, so it will have to do:

Btw, the rattling you hear after each rev is due to exhaust wind hitting the camera. So not a very good placement of the camera! :-)

Having switch from a 2/2 M&K to 2/2 Dansk sport I would say:

A. Don't idle the car
B. Don't listen to the radio, its mainly crap
C. Leave the house slowly until you pass the last house of known neighbour
D. Avoid cruising as it develop engine flat spot
E. All of the above ;)

It sound good as it is.

If you do get another muffler, do like me and keep the other one because mine is going back on :D:):D

Dude...that 3.0 sounds badass. If it was a 1 in/1 out I would say Dynomax 17676, but that looks like a 2 in/2 out.

Or Paul..you could get a cap for one tailpipe. Won't help with the neighbors all that much, but your drone issues might resolve themselves.

Here's my ROW 3.0 with factory premuffler and a 1 in 1out Flo-Pro muffler for a GM F Body. It really growls through the revs and the off throttle burble is cool as well.

I have the "plane jane" type of Dansk muffler that was posted above. It is not quiet at all being fed by SSI's on my 3.0 engine. The neighbors hear me long before they see me coming. Its also not stainless, which I don't personally like. I'm not sure this helps you choose a muffler, but if you're worried about the neighbors then this one may not help a lot. Just my opinion. If you're ever driving east send me PM and you can come hear it, as long as my car isn't halfway taken apart that day. SmileWavy
