Odometer repair question #1

OK, speedo is out of the car and apart on the workbench. Here's the question:

Since there are soldered connections from behind which prevent the internals from sliding completely free of the casing, is there anything that can be done to the white gear (on right side of picture) to try and improve contact with the brown gear? Wayne's book makes it sound like the white gear will slide off but heck if I can do that to mine. There is contact on mine but it looks like it could be closer even though no teeth are missing on any gear. Thanks - any help is appreciated and sorry for the picture quality.

Here are a couple of notes for anyone else doing this:
1) disconnect the battery
2) consult project 89 first in Wayne's book
3) the light bulb connectors SLIDE OUT from the rear - to do this use a small flatblade and gently pry up on the ENTIRE light cylinder. DO NOT twist the wires or else the bulbs will fall into the back of the speedo (ask me how I know)
4) draw a good diagram BEFORE disconnecting the wires because there are a couple which use the same color pattern
5) carefully pry the trim ring off and pay attention to the order in which the gaskets come off (I laid mine in order face down so I'd remember which way they go back on)
6) the unit will slide out BUT DO NOT pull on it as there are electrical connection soldered from behind
7) reinstallation should be the reverse but I'll let you know how it goes once finished.

No dig on your repair. We repair these all the time from people who take them apart and find that the gear is destroyed. We don't sell the gear - we have a gauge guy that we sub-contract out to. He won't sell us the gears either...

Doug,
I had the odo. go bad in mine and took it apart just like you. I tried everywhere to get a gear. I finally found a place thru the internet in Fla. I think, that would sell me the gear but he couldn't promise it would fit. It was like 35 or 40 bucks and no assurance that it would work.
I finally gave up and took it to a speedo shop here in town and got it back same day. Around 100 bucks or so.
Sometimes its better to concede a few dollars. Besides now I have the receipt for the work done and if you do it yourself no one will believe that you didn't tamper with the mileage if you ever try to sell it.
