Spacer for stock steering wheel

I have no complaints with my stock steering wheel, other than I'd like it to be 1-2 inches closer to me. Is there a spacer than will accommodate this, while allowing the horn and turn signals to work in their original fashion, or do I have to scrap it all and go with aftermarket?
Thanks,
-C

Charles, does your car already have the factory extended hub steering wheel? If not, replacing your wheel with the extended hub should get it an inch of so closer.

But note that the control stalks stay where they are, so spacing the wheels farther away will make for more reach to the signals and wipers.

Not that I know of. I'll have to research that one. Any idea what the part # is?
Stalks staying put is okay.
Thanks!

The extended hub wheels have the extension built into the wheel itself, it is not a desperate part sold by Porsche. You have to swap the old wheel for the "extended" one.

I installed the extended hub into my car a while back, there were two parts...one was a new, longer steering shaft which near as I can tell is no longer available, the second part was an aluminium disc that used 3 screws to attach to the bottom of the steering wheel itself.

Seemed like dramatic overkill by Porsche, but other than the pain of removing the shaft (about a day round trip) I do like the result.

I can dig for a p/n if you need it....

The extended shaft does sound like overkill, but if you can get one the advantage is you can also replace the steering column bearings which should be getting old; my lower bearing failed at 250k miles and got all 'ratchety'.

BTW, I was able to remove the shaft and the bearings without removing the steering colum from the car using some pullers I devised.

Can you expand on that, with part #s and pictures?

I have NEVER heard of such an extension. There is the extended hub option for the steering wheel, that is indeed an alloy spacer that bolts to a specific steering wheel crush cage with 3 bolts. But an extended steering shaft???

I have the factory extended wheel that javadog describes, the wheel and extension go together and can't be swapped with other wheels.

GeorgeK, I am trying to do the same, adding an extension to the steering wheel. Before I go into the path of buying a new steering, were you able to perform the extension in your steering wheel?

Yayo, see below. The black parts are the factory extended hub, the silver is the spacer I had made by a local workhop. These are from my 964, but the parts are the same for the 911.

Very nice, except this thread is about stock wheels.

George, just curious on the silver spacer pictured above. I have been looking for a spacer with a 3-bolt pattern hub same as the OEMs. I have an Italvolanti Formel steering wheel similar with bolt pattern of the 930S steering wheel. How much did it cost you to make those spacers?

Cost was about 80-100$ based on a basic drawing I made up. Local friendly machine shop did that for me.

Thanks George. Interesting you were able to bring the wheel at the distance that you wanted. I have a base steering wheel, doesn't even have the extended hub, I am wondering if I can extend it?
