Smoking after valve adjustment?
A friend of mine just had the valves adjusted on his '83 SC by a highly regarding mechanic. Now, his car smokes on start-up every time he starts it. Before, it would only puff one out of 3-4 starts.
I'm boggled how a valve adjustment could cause smoking at start-up????? Anyone???

Michael,
From a theoretical perspective, I don't see how the two could be related! However, if oil was drained and replenished ... maybe the oil tank was overfilled??? Ask your friend for any details about what else might have been done, because the 'major service' is usually what is done at the same time as a valve adjustment. If the brand or type of oil was changed ... that can be a factor in seepage/usage issues! Seriously, though. smoke at startup isn't a big concern. My theory is that it is only oil in the heat exchangers (seepage past exhaust valve stem seals and guides that are 'under oil' that drips down the exhaust port into the heat exchangers) that is being burned ... and not in the combustion chamber like many seem to believe! There have been several cases of oil found in mufflers and heat exchangers ... to support my theory.
