smoke from oil tank

Hi,

When I checked the oil level today I noticed that there is smoke coming from the oil tank......more like puffs that are related to engine speed. Since the oil is hot should you see this or is it a case of blow past from the rings, note new rings put in about 5k-10k ago.

I will do a compression test on the weekend but wanted to check to see if this is normal. I addition to this there is a bit of oil around the engine braether and pipe. This may, as I am thinking indicate that the crank case is being pressurised and blowing the oil out........any thoughts? By the way the engine was at about 220f since the external thermostat has packed it in and will be replaced this weekend as well.

Cheers

Mark......

Sounds like it could possibly be 'blow by', or compression loss past your rings. You could be dealing with a wear problem, so pass along more info on the engine. Are you sure all the vent hoses are connected correctly?

I would agree that this sounds like steam. As the oil heats, moisture in the oil is released (this is a good thing). When you open the tank (take the cap off) the moisture condenses in the cold ambient air and rises out. Looks like smoke..most likely steam.

P.S. - If your oil tank is really smoking, you've got issues ("Where there's smoke, there's fire").

The smoke is smoke and not steam, since it is there when the car is not at operating temp.......went for a quick trip to the shop and back......open the cap and there it was.....when I rev the engine it appears to be less......but then it is back again when the revs drop. There is also a bit of noise from number 3 & 6. My concern is a broken ring! The compression test should show this.

So when you open the cap do you get obvious smoke/steam. I am not in contect with any other porsche owners, and without any involvment with these engines in the past I need to draw on other peoples knowledge......maybe time to visit the local club.

Thanks for the feedback guys......

Sounds like you better get the compression test performed. That will tell you right away if there is a ring problem in one cylinder. By the way, what are the engine specs?
Good luck,
