Gas Tank 911

Hey guys getting ready to install thru body front sway, looks like access to driver side fender wall is only accessible with gas tank removed. Looks pretty straight forward. Anyone have any words of advice
Thanks

R&R of the gas tank is straightforward, if a bit time-consuming. Hardest(?) part is emptying the tank so you need to "drive it down" to minimum fuel and have a couple of containers handy. I siphoned what was left rather than try to pump it out. Figure on dome spillage anyway so be ready for that. When it's "empty" then disconnect the fuel lines (after removing the gravel shield) under the car. Actually pulling the tank is easy.

You should replace the tank-to-body seal before putting it back together.

To get my tank out I needed to gently jack from below with a piece of wood between the jack and the tank. Once I learned that trick it was a snap.

Tank removal tips:
1) drain it completely- you don't want underarm applications of 91 octane

2) Well ventilated area- gas fumes are noxious

3) no water heater pilot nearby

4) prepare your hose fitting plugs ahead of time

5) Get a new filler neck hose sleeve before you take it out. You would be surprised how many of these deteriorate over time and contribute to the fuel smell in the car

6) loosen the filler neck at the gas flap door and slide up upwards out of the car slightly. This gives you room to slide the tank neck out of the hose

7) Take care not to damage the fuse board on the driver side, with the filler neck (You already removed the battery from the car , right ? )

8) Get a new body to tank seal , when ordering the filler neck hose

9) Remove the three socket head bolts and clamps completely. Clean the threads and apply light dab of grease

10 ) a 1/2 inch thick 8 x 8 piece of plywood , on top of a hydraulic jack will pop the tank loose (refer to #7 above) without damaging the tank

11) Clean up all the years of debris hiding behind the tank while its out

12) you may want to consider freshening up the look of the tank while its out . DO NOT send it out for boil out ! there is a plastic sump inside the tank that will get damaged. There are threads here describing refinishing the tank if so desired

13) When reinstalling the tank, with a new seal, a small diameter (less than the socket bolt size) phillips screwdriver can help you pilot the tank into position
